Kamikaze iguanas fall from Florida's frozen trees

Record low temperatures in southern Florida have seen frozen iguanas falling out of the trees.

WTF!?!

Kamikaze iguanas fall from Florida's frozen trees

The lizards go into a type of hibernation when the temperature drops below around 9 degrees C, all body functions but the heart switching off and blood flow cut to a minimum.

It means they lose their grip on branches and the creatures, which are common in the "sunshine state", plunge out of the trees.

The lizards, which can grow up to five feet long, then lie grey and appear dead until the temperature rises again, at which time they usually revive.

So-called "kamikaze" iguanas are an urban legend among Floridians but have become a common sight as temperatures have dropped almost to freezing.

"It's almost like they totally go to sleep. Generally speaking, if it warms up afterwards, they can recover," said Ron Magill of Miami Metrozoo.

The green iguana, originally from Central and South America, is not native to Florida.

It is regarded as one of the most invasive species since it was introduced into the ecosystem, probably by irresponsible pet owners, in the mid-1990s.

Some see the creatures' current predicament as an opportunity to cull the numbers of a plant-eating invader that is regarded as a fearless garden pest.

It is legal to kill iguanas in Florida but only if it is done humanely. "If somebody is looking to trap them, I guess right now would be a good time because they're not moving," said Tiffany Snow, a biologist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

With temperatures expected to fall even lower, many iguanas may not survive anyway, she said.

However, Mr Magill warned of the dangers of tackling the creatures in their current state.

"I knew of a gentleman who was collecting them off the street and throwing them in the back of his station wagon, and all of a sudden these things are coming alive, crawling on his back and almost causing a wreck," he said.

It has snowed twice in louisiana this year. 3rd year in a row for a state that will see a snow storm normally once a decade.

Cash for hummers anyone?

This is what Climate Change does, create extreme weather patterns...

Ya, but the claim is that increases in CO2 lead to warming. The prediction graphs by climate scientists show that we should be experiencing exponential heating. That isn't what is happening.

Of course climate change is occuring, climate change always occurs. It doesn't mean CO2 has anything to do with it. In fact, human generated CO2 most certainly does not.

The late 1700s around 1780 is the end of the last mini-ice age. by the early 1800s you can find english naval records that detail open see lanes north of canadian landmass for the first time in a long time. so in 30 years we went from ice age to complete artic meltdown. pre-industrial.
prior to the mini-ice age there was a great warming period that allowed vineyards to be grown in northern england. no industry to cause CO2 increases.

hmmm... wonder why the weather pattern kept changing over the last 500 years prior to industry?

Ya, I need to search for the next season. Last show I saw they get busted for the hash shoot out and are back in prison.

What are you worried about? We're in a campaign year now. Plenty of hot air should be flowing shortly.

Keep in mind that their predictions (whether or not you believe they are accurate) are based on average global temperate over a year-long period, not simply North America's winter. While it is cooler than average this winter in North America, that can be offset by temperature increases in other areas (often times higher near-polar temperatures are cited) for a net global increase in temperature.

I'm not defending them, I am trying to clarify their statistics that you seem to have misconstrued.

Global temps are in decline. Not just in North America.

What makes you think I disagree with you? I was trying to caution against citing our cold winter as "proof" against global warming.

this is the 3rd straight severe winter in louisiana.
it will be 16F tonight. that doesn't happen in louisiana.
it might actually kill off some freakin' mosquitos and cotton mouths.

Ah. Well the other side isn't above anecdotes. Not long ago I was posting about declining global temps on the local "peace" (socialism 101) message board. Someone countered with how hot they felt it was the previous summer. Not an actual temperature reading mind you, just a gross recollection. I guess I should point that out to them now. :D

You know what's interesting? Increased CO2 actually means higher yields for outdoor crops. I'm really surprised the assholes at Copenhagen aren't standing up for poor farmers.

Notice how you guys have gone from the buzz word of global warming to climate change.

I don't think anyone doubts the climate changes. The earth has had many extreme weather patterns. Taxing humans to "control" the climate is the biggest scam ever.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure that the climate scientists are retarded. CO2 should cause global cooling, as its heat capacity is less than the weighted average of gasses in earth's atmosphere. Things like water (which is such a huge factor that the total contribution of all the CO2 on earth isn't even measurable against the noise from the natural variation of H2O in the air), methane (heat capacity ~20x that of CO2), and more complex organic molecules (heat capacity in the 10,000X range vs CO2, but present in much lower concentrations--likely the greatest human contribution to climate change) account for a far greater share of the atmosphere's heat capacity than CO2.

Apparently, these guys never took physical chemistry. If they had (and if they had understood the material), they would know this.

What I see mostly is just a big brigade of "copy and pasters" that literally just copy and paste every article or dataset from the global warming alarmist websites they can find. There's little, if any, critical thought behind what they are pushing.
