View Full Version : Richard Clarke: This attack may be what we needed to get over privacy concerns

Remember Richard Clarke? The holdover from the Clinton years who made headlines by being the first in the Bush administration to admit that the government had "failed" on 9/11? He was also the guy that took the wind out of the outrage over clearing the Bin Laden family to leave after 9/11 even though many planes were still grounded because he's the one that cleared them and he said it controversy was a "tempest in a teapot". (Later information confirmed that contrary to claims by Richard Clarke, Osama's brothers were deeply involved in funding terrorism.) Anyway he was recently interviewed by George Stephanopolus about the "underwear bombing". He made too troubling points (for me anyway).

1) Nobody in government should be held accountable for the mistakes because they were all "low level".

2) The new "electronic fixes are expensive, they malfunction and they give a lot of travelers a sense that their privacy is being invaded. This potential attack may be what we needed to get over those concerns."

I've thought for some time that Clarke was controlled opposition. Now I'm sure of it. It's the same crap we've been hearing for the past 8 years. Never hold anyone in government accountable. Work to get the American people to accept more tyranny. Propose "solutions" that you know don't actually do anything other than take away more civil liberties.

And for those who want more analysis and are not paranoid over reading something that hasn't first been approved by the mainstream media:

Oh he probably won't care. He can likely bypass security just like the sharp dressed Indian man that got the underwear bomber on the plane. That or he might be a dirty old man that gets off on exhibitionism.

To point 1 - don't worry, they're govt agencies, so mistakes will only draw more resources - rewarding failures.

To point 2 - This failure to stop even a low level, sloppy, and too small to even disrupt a flight if carried out is starting to help people get over their "we need more government protection" concerns. I've heard more people realize that the current path to safety is a joke because of this incident than to insist we need more invasive, resource wasting, and time intensive security measures mandated.

Yeah it's what "we" (the ones in power) needed and that is exactly why it happened.

Good points (especially point # 2) but that's why it's extremely important to get all of the facts out about this story! For instance I talked to someone yesterday who didn't know that the terrorist had gotten on without a passport. And the media is trying hard not to cover the "sharp dressed man" that got him through security. There is a full court press in the left and right wing media to use this story the way Richard Clarke intends.
