Dorgan Retirement Creates Opportunity for Conservatives

Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan announced yesterday that he will retire at the end of this Congress, creating another pick-up opportunity for conservatives. SCF is moving this seat onto our 2010 Watch List.
SCF is told that Republican Gov. John Hoeven will likely win the seat if he decides to run. Hoeven won a third term in 2008 with 74 percent of the vote, running 21 points ahead of John McCain, who took 53 percent. Even if Hoeven does not run, Republicans will likely field a very strong candidate.
SCF believes Democrats will try to recruit Rep. Earl Pomeroy, but he's not the best candidate. Pomeroy's poll numbers have suffered recently and he barely won re-election in 2008.
Dorgan's retirement creates a significant pick-up opportunity for conservatives and greatly diminishes the odds that Democrats can hold their 60-seat super-majority after the 2010 elections.
The challenge for conservatives is to find a candidate who believes deeply in constitutional limits, a balanced budget, and individual liberty. The principles of freedom are under attack in Washington, and we need true conservatives in the Senate who will fight to defend them.
