Writes David Adams, Rand Paul’s senate campaign manager:

Rand Paul has not hired Chip Saltsman,” Huckabee’s presidential campaign manager.

Considering there was already racially tied information about him scouring the blogosphere, I find this a good thing.

So, is the campaign insider a double agent, or is some random person pretending to send out emails, or, ...im confused.

There is some mole in the campaign that keeps sending two leftist KY blogs campaign inside information. Adams or Paul needs to track this person down and fire them ASAP.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mole completely faked that entire Rand Paul e-mail, or if it was faked by the campaign to try and find the mole.

But what is perhaps even more of a runaway problems seems to be that somehow bloggers have been able to gain access to copies of internal emails between Paul and his staff.

There is no suggestion that these emails were shared as a result of an official campaign policy regarding transparency. Rather, this disclosure of private emails raises a very serious questions regarding loyalty, leaks and perhaps even sabotage.

Seriously, there is someone with the campaign basically forwarding their internal e-mails to liberal bloggers. This needs to be dealt with ASAP and the person fired immediately.

From an IT perspective it shouldnt be very difficult to figure out who the mole is, if there is one. Only campaign insiders know if the emails are legit or not.

Maybe they were sending info through their personal computer or phone.

One of these guys is it. And why is Gillespie still getting campaign news? Feels fake.

Maybe they were sending info through their personal computer or phone.

The emails themselves still had to be accessed from the email server in order to forward them elsewhere through a personal computer or a phone. There are server logs, sent mail folders to be checked, account access times (2am emailing?) etc. The only case where it is entirely untraceable is if the emails were only a "copy and paste" job and then sent through some anonymous provider like gmail as a text reprint. If they were "forwarded" in any form then it is indeed very traceable. The question is how much effort do they want to put into finding out who it is.

ETA: Just saw RPFan's post above. If they are all using random email addresses through various providers then yeah that would be nearly impossible to track. I don't understand why that would be allowed though. Central email servers are insanely easy to set up and provide security. Note that gmail addresses are one of the few anonymous email providers that strip out IP address info from the message header. I'd be looking at the gmail people first.

Btw, is this really a big deal to anybody? Seems really petty. Maybe their deal fell through or maybe Saltsman doesn't want to be officially recognized. There's a million reasons why it could have been reversed. Waste of time worrying about imo. Finding the mole though is important and setting up a central email server for the campaign and requiring all campaign email to go through it is the way to do it.

It was forwarded.

Track 'em down and fire them.

See my edit above. I assumed RP2010 had a central email server up and running, but apparently not. Using random internet mail providers is sloppy work and just begging for stuff like this to happen. For a few thousand dollars a small, yet SECURE AND TRACEABLE email solution can be set up. Sounds like Rand needs a trustworthy IT guy.

There IS a randpaul2010.com domain name in one of the email addresses but that could just be a redirected DNS entry. I don't know their setup so it's speculation but whatever they do they need to stop using internet email addresses.

The leaks are absolutely a big deal, they are nothing more than sabotage, especially when these left-wing blogs are the recipients. Someone is either an undercover Mongiardo/Conway supporter, an Obama supporter, or a Grayson/anti-Paul person.

How to catch the snitch:

Once a week, tell just one person something you're going to be releasing in the next day or two. However, make sure that the news is false and make sure that person knows that everyone will be told of the news.

If something comes out in the next day, you know who it is.
