Cop Went Wild With Taser, Diabetic Says
By ROBERT KAHN ("http://www.courthousenews.com/2009/12/28/23144.htm"

(CN) - A suburban Chicago police officer Tasered a man 11 times while he was having a diabetic seizure, and the 56 seconds of needlessly inflicted electric shock, "inflicted ... while he was lying unresponsive on the floor of his bedroom, permanently scarred [him] and caused him neurological damage that has not abated," the man claims in Chicago Federal Court.

Prospero Lassi says he suffered a diabetes-induced seizure at home on April 9. His roommate called 911, and police from LaGrange Park and Brookfield responded, with EMTs from LaGrange Park.

Lassi says his roommate explained to police that he was having a diabetic seizure. Lassi "was not alert and could not move his body."

When the EMTs asked the cops to help them move Lassi from where he was lying on the floor, Lassi says, one of his "arms flailed during his diabetes-induced seizure, striking one of the LaGrange and Brookfield defendants. At no time did Mr. Lassi intentionally strike or offensively touch any of the LaGrange or Brookfield defendants."

Lassi says LaGrange Park Officer Darren Pedota responded by Tasering him 11 times, for nearly a minute, as he lay helpless.

He was hospitalized for 5 days, and was unable to work for 3 months because of the attack, "and his quality of life has suffered substantially," Lassi says.

"At no time did Mr. Lassi do anything to warrant the use of force against him. Mr. Lassi was never cited, arrested, or charged with any crime," according to the complaint.

Any real discipline applied to the officer?

This truly reminds me of a cattleman with a cattle prod. He sees it as a tool to force compliance from a dumb animal. The cops, excuse me, our "gods," now see tasers as the same thing: a tool to force the compliance of the dumb cattle.

Tasers started out as useful, defensive weapons for good, honest cops that wanted to protect themselves and fellow officers from harm during dangerous arrests. But now they are no different from a flashlight: Shine a light on a criminal (all citizens are criminals), fry the nervous system of a criminal.

Eh, either way they shrug their shoulders and put another notch on their steering wheel. After all, no harm came to the Copgod, now did it?

Soon the first thing done with any routine traffic stop will be to taser the person in the car, then pull them out, take the wallet or purse from them, and go through it. "We're just doing our jobs, Ma'am."

From greevar in the Digg comment section:

"Officer, I need help! I'm having an epileptic seizure!"

"Ride the lightning bitch!"

One day very soon there is going to be a civilian that uses Retaliatory Lethal Force against a cop that is tasering him. The police in this country had better damned well think hard about what they are doing. It won't matter in the end if the cop was 'a family man' and 'was a good father'. He'll be justifiably deader than a fucking doornail. Its time for Tasers to be disallowed for use by cops.

He's enjoying a 2 week paid vacation just now.

clearly the officer thought he was performing a medical procedure and restarting the guy's heart. After all, he watches House, so he must have been qualified. :( Shared on FB

Evidently, we can add these EMT's to the list of nutless cowards for not stopping this goon. I suppose that a one minute tazering isn't enough time for these EMT's to realize that it might not be in the best medical interest of the patient.

Too bad these EMT's didn't have any sense of self-respect like the hero Oklahoma paramedic in his encounter with the insane state trooper.

No one cares, this crap is displayed on TV all the time and there is no outrage. Last nights episode of Cops right in prime time TV for example they chased a guy threatening to taze him over a child support warrant. The state does this for the "best interest of the child" meanwhile they will lock the guy up and risk injury or death with a tazer. Obviously the result of which is unlikely to produce immediate payment if injured, dead or in jail.

Here is another one. At least this guy is going to get 300k but the article says he will suffer the rest of his life because of it.

$300K to Columbia man tased by police
http://www.connectmidmissouri.com/news/story.aspx?id=388942
Officers tried for 90 minutes to get a suicidal McDuffy to come down. The stand-off ended only after police fired two tasers at McDuffy. He fell fifteen feet to an embankment and was seriously injured. ......McDuffy should have never been tased by police and will suffer for the rest of his life because of it.

That'll teach him not to buy sugar.

Another ignorant.

Diabetics have to count ALL carbs not just sugar. Every single gram of carbohydrate that you consume is converted into glucose which enters your blood stream and feeds your cells producing life giving energy... if your body is producing the insulin which opens your cell receptors allowing the glucose to enter.

If your pancreas (which produces insulin) is dead, and you have no naturally producing insulin you have to inject synthetic insulin into your body to cover each gram of carb you consume.

Inject too much insulin-- have extremely low blood sugar... get a diabetic seizure maybe fall comatose.

Inject too little insulin...have extreme high blood sugar... get a diabetic seizure, maybe fall comatose, suffer extreme health problems (blindness, leg amputation, etc later on in life).

Not a laughing matter.

I heard you need to taze someone 12 times to stop them from being diabetic. Maybe myth busters should do a show on it.

agreed. i'm a diabetic and have gone both ways (violent and stupid unconciousness) when experiencing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). in Redmond a few years ago a lady had the same thing happen to her.

These EMTs should know exactly how to react in these situations -i.e. give the guy a shot of glucagon in the ass- particularly since they had been appraised of the situation by the roommate. this may be difficult if the diabetic is thrashing, but it must be done this way.

this just goes to show - never let the cops enter your house.
