I managed to keep a hold of the same swiss army knife for ten years. I was really proud of the fact that it didn't get lost, and I used it daily.

Until three weeks ago. I suffered a massive concussion while skiing out in Salt Lake, so the day afterward on my way home I totally forgot to go through my regular pre-boarding self-strip-search to get rid of anything I didn't want to lose to security.

No problem, the obvious fourth grade graduate representative of TSA said (seriously, I had a head injury and I could tell this guy wasn't all there)... just take the knife through security (seriously!), put it in a mailing envelope available for sale on the other side of security, and we'll mail it out in a day or two.

I can't even trust these people to drop an addressed, stamped package in a mailbox. What reason do I have to place my life in their hands?

The old Harry Browne saying that "government can't deliver mail on time" has never been a favorite of mine. Actually, the USPS does a pretty good job, considering how much junk mail it has to deliver. It is the highest ranked government agency from a consumer satisfaction standpoint. I've never been too critical of the post office, other than the fact that it should have been privatized decades ago.

Lambasting the post office doesn't win converts. Find a more worthy government agency to excoriate. Like the IRS.

The USPS also has private competitors and is funded by user fees.
