View Full Version : "Hearts and minds" for some soldiers means "two in the heart and one in the mind”

Incredible, Obama is sending more troops to spread freedom and equality in Afghanistan but has he put in place any screening process to see what kind of people are heading there to win hearts and minds?

Just stumbled on this:

On Sunday night, Temple finally flew out of Kuwait on a C-17 Globemaster to Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan. That’s where Temple encountered several soldiers who had just finished their year tour and were headed back to the United States.

“I’m really surprised at some of the opinions and some of the bitterness that they hold,” Temple said. “Our motto here is winning their hearts and minds. But for some of these soldiers they’re like “yeah, two in the heart and one in the mind” - meaning two bullets in the heart and one in the mind. And some of them are leaving here very bitter.”

Yet, Temple understood their frustration. The soldiers had spent a year in Afghanistan, yet hadn’t seen any change. “Everybody wants change right now today. And it’s not going to happen. You have to establish relationships with these tribes with the tribal elders and its going to take time and we’re just so used to having results right away.”

For the most part, Temple said it was younger soldiers who were discontent.

There are much better ways to establish relationships with tribal elders than through military occupation.

Can anyone name one war in history that was won by "winning hearts and minds?"

I don't have the answer but more questions when it comes to our foreign policy.

How was the war in Iraq "won"?

Not counting the economic costs at home.

If you read about the Chinese civil war, Mao was actually kind and polite to people. Sadly, power corrupts.

^he wasn't a foreign occupier though.

Honestly, who can blame these soldiers? They're trained to be killing machines and then they're ham stringed when they actually see action.

If civil wars are excluded, I can't think of anything. It would go against common sense, as the people would welcome the entering army so there wouldn't be need for war. In a sick way, the closest thing in recent history would be the Anschluss.

Is it a war or not? Wars are for brutally killing and destroying everything people hold dear until they throw themselves upon the mercy of their conqueror.

"Winning hearts and minds" is just one of many propaganda slogans to get the masses behind the destruction.
