Got an email from the US Chamber of Commerce.

It is a call to lobby my congress critters to oppose Senate bill 1504 and a companion house bill H.R. 4115 which apparently are the brain children of Senator Arlen Specter.

Those of you who are good at disecting these bills, please tell me about the implications for liberty and small business.

The chamber claims the law will put government officials at risk for lawsuits which could undermine national security. For this I think I would support the bill.

However, they also claim it would put businesses at risk of frivolous lawsuits. Well, since businesses already are often frivolously attacked in court, I wonder if this bill would really make it any worse. Also, would the bill attack small business owners like me, or would it just open up litigation against folks like the CEO of Goldman Sachs for his TARP bonuses? Once again, if the latter, I might actually support the bill.

If it's from Arlen Specter, I can most assuredly say the devil MUST be in the details, as things often are.
