View Full Version : Dave Ramsey gets political!

I'm sure most are familiar with finance guru Dave Ramsey. Usually he just gives common sense advice. Today he read a long letter from a family care doctor who is giving up his practice due to overwhelming federal regulation which is only going to get worse with universal health-care. Dave went on to point out that the so called health-care "crisis" really has nothing to do with the problems in the economy and that has more to do with the debt run up by the republicans and that's being run up higher by the democrats. I know I'm not doing this justice, but the archive isn't posted on the web yet and I wanted to get this out early. What excites me about this is that Dave's heretofore political neutrality means he can penetrate places that other people can't. Many African American churches, for instance, do "financial peace" seminars. Dave has also consistently supported the idea of health savings accounts, private health insurance and the fact that health-care is cheaper if you pay for it with cash. Interesting development.

He gets political from time to time. And from what you've said, I don't see anything out of character for him. This is all stuff that almost every Republican says. It could just as easily have come from Sean Hannity or John McCain. I like Dave Ramsey over all. And I'm glad he sometimes says stuff like this. I'm also glad to hear him blast Republican hypocrisy from time to time. But he also has been derogatory to Ron Paul. And he loves fiat currency.

When he talks politics he'll go as far as saying I lean libertarian...on economic issues.

From the way he preaches all the time, I doubt he's libertarian on social issues.

He's also not a fan of gold. Preferring growth stock mutual funds for long term investing.

Matt, thanks for giving the links that puts this in perspective.

Everyone else, my point isn't that Dave is perfect. I've heard him say things that I disagree with such as telling people not to "panic" and get out of the stock market. (I think he should be steering people to precious metals as they have a better chance for holding value.)

That said Dave has clout with the (former and current) Obama supporters I'd like to reach. That's because getting out of personal debt is something that everybody can agree to. Freedom is popular? So is financial freedom! I can't hand certain people a Glenn Beck CD or DVD. I can hand them a Dave Ramsey CD and they'll gladly take it. I can also hand the people I'm targeting an Alex Jones DVD since he's been consistent in attacking traitors in both parties, but that makes some people around here nervous. (People have yet to figure out the truth that there was no "truther effect" in the 2008 election). I'm thinking ahead to my 2010 outreach efforts. Outreach means going beyond the "echo chamber" of people who agree with us 100%. And yeah, I'll concede we should reach out to Beck and Palin supporters. But I'm not advocating Dave for VP and he's not trying to be the "leader" of anybody's political movement.

I like Dave Ramsey, and I hope people who read his book shed the chains of debt from their lives.

The more people he reaches with that message, the better. Personally, I don't care what he thinks about Ron Paul, Gold or Libertarianism.

Good points! I need to add some people here have no sense of strategy! Because Dave's "get out of debt" message has cross party, cross racial, cross religious, cross class appeal he can reach people the rest of us can't. I know people still drinking the Obamacare cool-aid that like Dave Ramsey. That's who I'm targeting. Others may have similar experiences.

Same can be said about Obama's "get out of Iraq" message, where do we draw the line.

At some point we have to figure totality of a pundit's ideological makeup before considering him/her a useful advocate for libertarian ideas. Problem with DR's message is that he has consistently advocated Bush/Cheney and neoconservatives' trillion dollar plus foreign spending/reconstruction policies that negate the "get out of debt" message. It's not a minor contradiction that can be looked over.

Not really.

1) Obama isn't getting out of Iraq.
2) Obama said he wasn't getting out of Iraq even before he got elected.
3) Obama wasn't giving a message that had any potential of changing any minds. The people who support Obama overwhelmingly wanted out of Iraq anyway so he was just pandering (lying) to them. Dave Ramsey has a lot of listeners who support Obama. Hearing from him about the perils of Obamacare might actually change some minds.
4) Obama is a politician, not a pundit. Pushing Obama's message (which was just pandering) risked him getting elected. If people get turned out to Dave Ramsey the worst that will happen is they'll get out of debt.

 Dave Ramsey doesn't even talk about foreign policy on his show. Do you think Obama supporters would listen to him if he did? He keeps his show largely a-political for a reason. Like I said, some people on this board have zero sense of strategy.

I'm pretty sure Dave didn't endorse anyone for president in 2008 so it's ridiculous to assume he'll endorse anyone in 2012. Besides this isn't about an endorsement. It's about a financial advisor respected by democrats and republicans alike putting forward a solid position against Obamacare. It's no different from the owner of Whole Foods putting forth a solid alternative to Obamacare. I could care less who these people actually vote for or endorse. They are people who can use their influence with sway some of those who have been snookered by the socialist siren song on health-care. Really, some of you have no sense of strategy.

I was referring to his message that he used to get elected and still seem to advocate, DR hasn't got America out of debt either :)

I had heard more than couple of times in the middle of his financial talks DR speaking out in support of Bush/Cheney's foreign freedom projects when they were in office. He seems like a religious man, so he may have looked at that foreign spending from same angle as much of Bush's evangelical base saw but it did sound very contradictory economically speaking. Haven't heard him in over a year to be fair, have heard Howard Clark few times lately and seems to have good info often.

I'll take your word for it. It doesn't really matter. I'm not advocating Dave Ramsey to be president or Ron's VP or head of the "tea party" movement or grand pubah of the shriner circus. I'm simply pointing out that:

A) He said some helpful things about the real problems surrounding Obamacare and:

B) He's respected by a lot of people I know that still support Obamacare.

His position on this is 100% helpful. Why you don't understand this I'm sure I'll never know.

I've never understood why sheeple fall into personality cults. It is important for each individual to confront and ideologically hammer those who expound ideas of which they find incorrect or dangerous. A foolish policy of appeasement advances nothing except defeat.

Also, when confronted, spineless neo-con spewing chickenhawks like Ramsey, Beck, etc will change their positions in a heartbeat when they detect a change in public opinion. The hallmark of a false profit is their ability to change direction mid-stream.

In short, screw Dave Ramsey and the horse he rode in on. When the inevitable occurs in our country and IF there are enough people that wake up and see things for how they are, Ramsey will decide to be on our side. How's that for strategy?

I'm not at all suggesting that he's not good at advising individual callers on how to get out of debt, cut their consumer BoA credit cards etc, my point is that he's been part of the movement that maxed out America's credit cards and there is major contradiction in his political stances that should not be over looked in a liberties discussion.

We're probably looking at two sides of a coin. I bet if you asked him about new Obama spending in Afghanistan, he would say that's not enough and Obama needs to spend more, stay their longer without timeline etc. If that's a wrong prediction, I will accept your view on DR : )

It's a minor issue though about an individual's views, I fully agree with underlying views and ideas you have used to educate others in general and the objectives.

When I go up to people who support Obamacare it's helpful if I can give information from someone they know and trust has given solid reasons against it. As far as him being "part of the movement" that maxed out "America's credit cards" I disagree. A couple of statements in support of this or that doesn't a "movement member" make. I once supported the war in Afghanistan. So did Ron Paul for that matter. He voted for the authorization of the use of force afterall. (Yes he did later say he regretted that). Dave never bought into the whole Bush deficit spending regime or the bailouts.

Have you ever heard of Michael Savage? He's so rabidly anti muslim that he was banned from traveling to Britain. Even he's come out against the war in Afghanistan so I wouldn't be surprised if Ramsey surprises you. And yes I've used Michael Savage's new position on Afghanistan to talk to people about Ron Paul's cause (not the same audience I'm trying to reach with Dave Ramsey) and no I don't want Savage for president or VP either.

It's a minor issue about an individual's views though, I fully agree with underlying views and ideas you have used to educate others in general and the objectives.

I don't like his snarky attitude about gold.

That is all.Well he is correct that gold isn't a good investment. In fact gold isn't an investment it all. It's speculating in a commodity. There is a difference between speculating and investing. Buying gold will do you no good over the long run other than maintaining its value against inflation. Gold will not grow your money over the long run in a guaranteed manner like a properly diversified portfolio will.
