Saying it’s time for Republicans to do more than “take pot shots at ACORN,” freshman Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz will call on President Barack Obama on Monday to bring U.S. troops home from Afghanistan.

Chaffetz’s push for a troop withdrawal — to be unveiled in a speech at the Hinckley Institute of Politics in Salt Lake City — runs counter to the position of House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio and other leading Republicans in Congress. But it also reflects the divisions within the conference about the question of Afghanistan. Chaffetz told POLITICO the issue “has been probably the most difficult one as a freshman in the minority.”

“So much of this is easy, black and white, but Afghanistan is very different and very difficult,” he said.

Chaffetz said he thinks he will “suffer” for the decision and that it would be safer for him politically to stay the course he’s been on.

“I can take pot shots at [Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now] all day long, and I’m good at it,” Chaffetz said. “But even though I am probably going against where the party is on this traditionally, I just think we need to stand up and support the notion that it is time to bring our soldiers home.”

Earlier this year, Chaffetz traveled to the region and said that, since then, he’s “become more engrossed in my conviction it is time to bring our troops home.”

“I am opposed to nation building, and I quite frankly don’t see or understand what victory looks like,” he said. “I believe, as most people do, that our military can do everything we want them to do. ... But we’re asking them to fight a war that is not very well-defined. And we are asking them to do so with one hand tied behind their back.”

Chaffetz said the House GOP is divided over whether to “go big or go home” and acknowledged that the “go home” contingent is probably in the minority.

He's also an early cosponsor of Audit the Fed, and has had good things to say about Ron Paul.

good to see we got OTHER republicans other than Ron Paul showing dissent against this ridiculous unconstitutional war.... I mean now would be the perfect time for the republican party to go back to their roots Ron Paul has been leading that way for a long time anyway it's time others followed in pursuit

the easist way to wake up the gop is to have guys/gals like this to win and the rest of the republicans to lose. the only way we can reshape the gop is to make sure many of the republicans lose that disagree with our republican platform and do our best to help the Pro-peace/strong defense/anti-war republicans WIN.

if the gop leadership is gonna ignore the republican platform, then VOTE'EM OUT!!!

If they are not for bringing the troops home and ending undeclared wars. then they do not need to win!

forget code pink, what we need is CODE RED!!!!!!

There doesn't seem to be too much to go on with this guy. This is his first year in office. But what I see so far looks not so bad.

This is awesome!

Chaffetz announced at the start of the Congressional term in 2009 that he would be sleeping on a cot in his office rather than renting a Washington, D.C. apartment.[13] Chaffetz said, "I'm trying to live the example that it doesn't take big dollars in order to get where we want to go. I can save my family $1,500 a month by sleeping on a cot in my office as opposed to getting a fancy place that's maybe a little bit more comfortable."[13] His family will continue to live in Alpine. "We are now $10 trillion in debt. $10 trillion. Those are expenses that have to be paid at some point," he said. If he can tighten his belt in these tough economic times, Chaffetz said, Congress should be able to as well. [13]

Is he not against the Iraq war?
It's almost like Iraq was more Bush's war and Afghanistan is more Obama's.

What freaking mess.

Just like Ron Paul. I think it was for the past 6 months though, his overall rating is 90%. Still bloody amazing.

Don't I recall hearing he was a Ron Paul supporter or something?

In the unlikely possibility that I ever get elected to Congress, I won't ever be sleeping on a damn cot in my office.

haha. You know I get it. He is doing something to demonstrate that he is fiscally responsible. I am cool with that. But I ain't gonna judge a congressman for having a damn apartment. I just don't want the jerks living a life of luxury off the tax payers dime.

Sincerely,

Slutter McGee

It's not gonna matter. I think we'll leave and they will continue their weird drone/ CIA wars all over the place.
