New York, NY, November 16, 2009 … Rumors about gun confiscations. Angry protests about the government's tax policies, replete with Nazi comparisons. A resurgent militia movement. Rage at the election of a president deemed to be illegitimate and threatening. Distrust and anger toward the government fueled by paranoia and conspiracy theories.

They are among the crosscurrents of anger and hostility that have swept certain sectors of the country since President Barack Obama took office nearly a year ago. And they are contributing to "a toxic atmosphere of rage in America," according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which today issued a report looking at the various sources that have given rise to a climate of anti-government fervor in the United States.

Rage Grows in America: Anti-Government Conspiracies examines the groups and individuals behind this upsurge in anti-government anxiety, from the "birthers" who claim the president is not an actual citizen of the U.S., to militia groups fearful that the government plans to forcibly disarm American citizens, to those who suggest that the health-care reform movement is akin to the Nazi policies that led to the Holocaust.

"In the year since we marked the historic election of the nation's first African-American president we have seen a tremendous amount of anger and hostility," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "There is a toxic atmosphere of rage in America being witnessed at many levels, and it raises fundamental questions for our society.

"While not all of America has bought into these conspiracies, they seem to be seeping more and more into the mainstream," added Mr. Foxman. "And since many of these expressions are interconnected in some significant ways, we wanted to try and connect the dots and ask the basic questions of why the anger, why now, and where might it lead."

From the anti-government "Tea Parties," where protestors have made explicit Nazi comparisons or suggested that the president is subverting the Constitution, to anger-filled town hall meeting disruptions over health care, the wave of anti-government animus has manifested itself in many forms, according to ADL. It has played out across a spectrum of groups, from mainstream groups and politicians to more extreme organizations and individuals.

"The fact that these anti-government sentiments are coming from such a broad spectrum makes it more likely that some individuals will become so inflamed with anger that they will move farther toward the fringes," said Robert G. Sugarman, ADL National Chair. "This could result not only in the swelling of the ranks of anti-government extremist groups and movements, but might give rise to more individuals who are willing to act on their anger."

The ADL report looks at various sources of anti-government anger, including:

· Conspiracy Theories: One of the most disturbing trends in the rise of anti-government sentiment has been the resurrection and proliferation of conspiracy theories alleging dark, violent designs on the part of the federal government to "declare martial law" and end democratic government, to confiscate firearms from American citizens and to build hundreds of concentration camps to house "dissidents." These theories have spread far and wide on social-networking sites.

·The Resurgence of the Militia Movement: The rise of anti-government sentiment has paralleled a resurgence of the militia movement, an anti-government extremist movement that has a long history of criminal activity and violence. Within the past two years, the movement has almost quadrupled in size, growing to more than 200 groups in the United States. It is the most receptive audience for the extreme anti-government conspiracy theories and their radicalizing potential.

·Town Hall Meeting Disruptions: In the summer of 2009 a variety of anti-government protests and disruptions occurred at town hall meetings organized by senators and representatives across the country to discuss health-care reform. These events became a fertile ground for anti-Obama protests and stunts, with some individuals angrily launching verbal attacks against the president and other office holders. Some protestors compared the administration and its proposed health care reform policies to those of Nazi Germany.

· Government Resisters: Since Obama's election, an increasing number of people have urged that he and his administration must "be resisted." Some groups have implicitly or explicitly urged armed resistance. Many of these groups have appropriated an idealized version of Revolutionary War history for their own purposes. ADL's report looks at the activities of several resistor groups, including The Oath Keepers and The Three Percenters.

·The Tea Parties: At these events and later sequels organized by conservative groups and grassroots activists, anti-government sentiments and conspiracy theories proliferated, with a common theme being that Obama had "stolen" the country from Americans.

· Media Influence: Some segments of the mainstream media have played a surprisingly active role in generating anti-government sentiment. Though a number of media figures and commentators have taken part, the media personality who has played the most active role has been radio and television host Glenn Beck, who along with many of his guests have made a habit of demonizing the Obama administration and promoting conspiracy theories about it.

Hate Crimes Spike: Religion, Race, Sexual Orientation are Main Targets

Conservative religious leaders were some of the sharpest opponents of the federal legislation passed in October that expanded federal hate crimes law to include protections for homosexuals.

But during the debate, none of them raised the idea of revoking the existing protections for religious victims under the law. And it seems unlikely that even those few religious leaders who think hate crimes laws are unnecessary would want to raise the subject now in light of new statistics showing attacks based on the religion of the victim rose nearly 9 percent in 2008 over the previous year. That is the highest jump across all major categories, according to FBI hate crime statistics released Monday.

Following close behind religiously motivated hate crimes were racially motivated attacks against African-American targets, which rose more that 8 percent in 2008 -- the year that saw the first African-American in history secure a major party nomination, and then win the general election to become the first black president. The rise in anti-black crimes -- from 2,658 in 2007 to 2,876 in 2008 -- contrasts with a decline in attacks against whites, from 749 in 2007 down to 716 in 2008.

As has been the case for several years, racially motivated attacks account for about half of all bias crimes (51.3 percent) and religiously motivated attacks were next at 19.5 percent, followed by crimes linked to sexual orientation, at 16.7 percent of all attacks. The FBI said 11.5 percent of hate crimes (894) were motivated by ethnicity or national origin, with about two-thirds of those against Hispanic targets. That overall number was down significantly from 2007, when 1,007 such crimes were investigated.

Overall, hate crimes rose to their highest levels since 2001, when a spike in anti-Islamic incidents following the 9/11 attacks pushed the annual total over 9,000. For 2008, the total number of bias crimes was 7,783, a two percent rise from 2007. Most offenses (5,542) were classified as crimes against persons; acts of "intimidation," such as harassment, accounted for 48.8 percent of crimes against persons, simple assaults for 32.1 percent, and aggravated assaults for 18.5 percent. There were seven murders. The rest of the incidents were classified as "offenses against property," such as arson and vandalism.

The number of incidents based on sexual orientation increased slightly in 2008, but the number of lesbian, gay or transgender victims (each incident can have more than one victim) rose by 11 percent, the third consecutive year that figure has risen.

"We have to prosecute each hate crime to the fullest extent of the law, but we also need to get at the roots," said Joe Solmonese, head of Human Rights Campaign, a leading gay rights advocacy group. "When we don't know each other as human beings, ignorance breeds misunderstanding, which breeds hate, which too often this year led to violence. We have to keep fighting the prejudices and stereotypes that underlie these acts."

The breakdown in religiously motivated crimes shows several interesting trends -- though the consistent reality is that Jews and Jewish institutions continue to account for two-thirds of religiously motivated attacks, even though Jews account for less than 2 percent of the U.S. population.

Just wait until the SPLC's next report comes out. The pattern here is that all conservative activists are "anti-government", angry, violent and racist. Pretty simple pattern. But having listened recently to Heidi Beirich of the SPLC, when asked if her organization was looking into any other forms of potential domestic terrorism or violence in the USA, she admitted that no, they didn't even track data on other things.

In other words, SPLC and ADL are specifically targeted at us. As suggested by other posters, we're their bread and butter.

Of course they're going to report this, you think you'd see the headline:

ADL Report: Rage non-existent in America, Everything's Hunky-Dory!

?

You won't, because if you did, there would be no ADL.

This comment is very disturbing. Tea Parties are pure Americana, a great place for average people to get involved in political activism.

ADL is bogus, their claim about Obama nothing more than a false racism charge. I think that even those who oppose Obama understand he was elected, and will be up for election again in 2012.

"Anti-govenment" is just negative spin against those who are pro-liberty and pro-Constitution.

The claim about "conspiracy theories" is also bogus. Actual scientists have found military grade nano-thermite explosives in the WTC dust for example. Where does ADL think this came from? When scientists find forensic evidence, that is not a theory, it is science.

I would support any group of active people who got together to protest, even socialists.

It's funny, as soon as I seen that video it reminded me of Richard Dawkins The Root of All Evil, he speaks with a guy that was Jewish but switched over to Muslimism and was a very threatening person, I thought he was going to kick Dawkins ass.

I have to say, I did try to find some official kind of proof that the ADL did sponsor that Nazi group (Kuhn) under the table but couldn't find anything, that doesn't mean it didn't happen but I wouldn't walk around quoting it unless I knew it as fact.....

Something else that bothers me is....

Our Chief of Staff here is a man that worked with the Israeli Defense Forces in his younger days and oh yeah, by the way, his dad was with a Zionist Militant Group that helped kill innocent people... oh well... no biggie.

We can't have Goyisch faces reviving that shade of evil. We have exposed their true colors! We demand new, anti-Goyisch hate crimes legislation..."

I checked it, you were right.

Dawkins was in the Middle East when he interviewed that guy so I didn't connect them when I seen him in that video up there. I haven't seen The Root in about two years, a great video.

I remember the first time I saw it I thought it was weird that Cohen was so blatant with his hate, like he definitely wanted to attract attention.

I guess that's why it re-minded me........

It's at 1 minute 24 seconds.
