Many should read.

George Will nailed it:

Oh gosh, that's not simple. Neoconservatives are persons who in domestic policy often were former Democrats who felt that conservatives had erred in not accepting the post-New Deal role of the central government. They were in their early incarnation focusing on domestic policy and were distinguishing themselves from Goldwater conservatives.

Also in domestic policies, however, as the '60s unfolded into the '70s and '80s, they led the critique of overreaching in domestic social engineering, saying that we accept the post-New Deal role of the central government, but the accumulated powers thereof are being wielded in a way too confident and optimistic and hubristic, if you will.

In foreign policy, and here's where it gets interesting, they have a more ambitious, more confident approach to the use of power than regular conservatives -- if you see the symmetry here? They say that America is a nation uniquely equipped as the sole remaining superpower to order the world and spread our values, etc., etc.

Who are they? The ones most commonly mentioned are Charles Krauthammer, Paul Wolfowitz, maybe Dick Cheney and his aide, Scooter Libby, Doug Feith in the Pentagon, Bill Kristol.

Been looking at this subject a lot lately, thanks for posting that.
These guys are like the New kids on the Block of the Neocons.
Charles Krauthammer, Paul Wolfowitz, maybe Dick Cheney and his aide, Scooter Libby, Doug Feith in the Pentagon, Bill Kristol.
I think there was this Nazi dude named Leo Strauss that started the whole thing.
It's a coup no doubt and its Republican and Democrat in scope all across the board.

all you need to do is watch "The Power of Nightmares" (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=207920) to understand all about the neocons

You can say a lot of things about Dick Cheney but he is most certainly not a Neocon.

Just because one is allied with the Neocons does not make one a Neocon. Cheney certainly shares many foreign policy views with the Neocons.

it's a good description but it's important to remember the GOP has always been lame.

the rockefeller republicans were as numerous as the goldwater republicans. and the type of people in general who get into politics are horrible.

it's not like the neocons came along and ruined or even really changed the GOP though I agree they made it worse.

Yes....I studied Francis Fukuyama alot during undergrad. Not just Jewish. Some of these guys actually believe in the theory of historical progression with Democracy being the endstate. His book was very influential in my early years.

todd- alot of that had to do with timing. that book of his came out when what it was saying was basically true. we didn't know about radical islam or insane inflation yet. the berlin wall had fell, gold was like 300 dollars an ounce or something. oil was 10 dollars a barrel. we were the worlds police and kicked ass in panama, iraq and elsewhere. when the winning streak ended so did the neocons' winning streak

Leo Strauss and Lionel Trilling also had big influences on Irving Kristol.

Commentary Magazine still exists today.

Also, Irving Kristol's old publication Encounter has gone away, but I believe his wife still has some influence over a book publication arm.
