KY-Sen: Mitch McConnell Makes His Choice

By David Weigel 11/17/09 9:39 AM

Rand Paul, the son of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), has surprised a lot of people by surging in polls and fundraising to quasi-frontrunner status in next year’s U.S. Senate race in Kentucky. But Chris Cillizza reports that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is weighing in against Paul and hosting a fundraiser for Trey Grayson, the young secretary of state, whose “establishment” candidate credentials have been a little banged up by Paul’s campaign.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/morning-fix/morning-fix-18.html?wprss=thefix

3. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) is making his candidate preferences known in two Republican primaries -- hosting a fundraiser in New York City on Dec. 7 to benefit former New Hampshire attorney general Kelly Ayotte and Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson, according to a copy of the invite obtained by the Fix. Ayotte will face at least two candidates in the GOP primary -- businessmen Ovide Lamontagne and Bill Binnie -- while Grayson is being challenged by Rand Paul, the son of Texas Rep. Ron Paul. The National Republican Senatorial Committee made news last week when it made clear it would not involve itself financially in contested primaries. But, McConnell's involvement for Grayson and Ayotte make clear where the "smart money" is in these primary fights.

Grrrr....

From a D.C. fundraiser to a NYC fundraiser?

Oh man, Rand Paul's campaign is going to have fun with this one.

Grayson's campaign manger is claiming he is not the establishment candidate. This is a great opportunity to throw Grayson under the bus.

Read the thread here:

http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=219349

Rand Paul’s primary opponent appears to have given up on his “Rand Paul is an outsider” campaign and is now trying to pin the outsider label on himself.

From Politico:

“To get a sense of just how much clout the Club for Growth has gained at the party leaders’ expense, look to Kentucky and the race to fill the seat of retiring Republican Sen. Jim Bunning.”

“Both of the leading Senate Republican primary candidates there are vying for the club’s endorsement — and neither wants one from the National Republican Senatorial Committee.”

“”I think our race is shaping up a lot like the other races: There is a sort of establishment candidate and a conservative who wants to defend a party platform that is against bank bailouts and a lot of the things going on in Washington,” said primary candidate Rand Paul, the son of Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul ofTexas.”

“Paul, who has been active in Kentucky Taxpayers United, a local fiscal conservative group, said, “We hope we hit a chord” with Club for Growth officials. “I feel we represent the conservative alternative in our primary,” he said, adding that his chief opponent, Trey Grayson, was feted at an NRSC fundraiser in September.”

“But Nate Hodson, Grayson’s campaign manager, hotly disputed that assessment of the primary.”

“”There is no establishment candidate in this race. There is no incumbent. We reject the label. We reject it completely. We are not the establishment candidate,” said Hodson.”

Grayson probably wishes he had his “Rand Paul is an outsider” comment back now that his pollster is telling him to eschew his role as establishment candidate.

Lol------Wall Street (money) + Washington (Money)

You probably could make the argument by some finagling that tax payers funds are Trey's major contributor...

Looks like we'll have to hit him over the head with the fundraising hammer a few more times before he learns his lesson. Told you it wasn't gonna be easy... but we can win! :)

All out promoting the money bomb!

Jezus this is getting annoying!! Just support Rand you idiots!! The GOP hypocrites are so worthless....blab on and on about how they are fighting Obama's socialism, big government, yada yada yada....then when an awesome candidate comes along with tons of grassroots support - and will actually stand up to these things - they support his socialist big government hack of an opponent. This seriously makes me sick.

McConnell needs to be voted out with the rest of these scum fools.

My PAC's sending $1000 to Rand because of this.

OK Mitch, the gloves are off. The first time it could be said that Grayson was the leading candidate and had no real oposition. Not now! Mitch's Bailout tarp funds the new york bankers and Grayson campaign. This will not go over well with the rural Kentuckians.

On September 23rd, twenty three Republican US Senators held a $500 per plate fundraiser in Washington DC for Trey Grayson - Rand Paul's opponent. This deck stacking favoritism in a highly contested GOP primary was considered unacceptable by grassroots activists, who organized a massive online fundraising event for Rand Paul's campaign on the same day.

Well, the establishment is at it again. As recently reported by the Washington Post, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is hosting another fundraiser, this time in New York City on Dec. 7, to raise money for Trey Grayson. This contrasts with the pledge made by the National Republican Senatorial Committee last week that it would not involve itself financially in contested primaries.

This fundraiser presents an opportunity for limited-government activists to send another message to the political insiders. We refuse to accept their handpicked candidates who will do no more than toe the party line. Instead, we demand the leadership of principled candidates like Dr. Rand Paul, who will always put the Constitution first.

Show your commitment to real reform by pledging right now at http://www.RandsTeaParty.com, and then on December 16th sending your contributions to http://www.RandPaul2010.com.

Yep. This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about when I suggested that we keep an eye on the aftermath of that meeting to make sure Rand didn't sell the farm. This is definitely a good sign.

You know if Mitch McConnell can handpick Bunning's successor why the heck won't Bunning put his 2 cents in. Mitch literally ended the guy's career. If I got pushed out like he did I'd have the balls to endorse Rand just to stick it in Mitch's eye.

Bunning needs to man up.

Bunning's support won't help much. He's got higher negatives than favorables -- even among Kentucky Republicans.

Rand needs professional campaign staff, professional campaign ads, and professional everything. I want him to win but I swear to god if I see another "He's catching on, I'm telling you!" type ad I will officially freak.

Who's that guy who supported Ron Paul, and he helped Bush get elected? We need to bring his sexiness.

We can try to resurrect what the grassroots did in the past.

I have noticed new people joining the movement but some supporters are still burned by the "official campaign" and their actions toward some supporters in the movement.

I always try to move on and look forward but others have a harder time.

I am already sending out emails to several people hoping they will respond.

All this reminds me of a certain set of commercials, and although it would probably violate copyright laws, I'd like to see someone come up with a commercial that would be as follows:

Announcer: Trey Grayson is having a fundraiser with some fat cat bankers in New York City.

Pace Picante Sauce cowboys: New York City????? Get a rope.
