Definitely cool. Whoever thinks the internet was invented by the Dept of Defense and not the free market is sorely misinformed.

I signed up for hotmail the year it started. i didn't realize how old my account is and how well i've managed to not rack up a massive amount of spam.

I don't recall napster being the first p2p. i thought edonkey was before that...
also usenet and IRC were really the first p2p trading.

I also signed up for SETI@home the year it was created too. :)
congress was defunding the project, so let the free market provide a way.

To my knowledge no government agency invented the modem, usenet, or any of the first online communities that made the internet accessible to everybody with a phone & computer.

True, however DARPA did develop TCP and IP which were later married to form TCP/IP

Mind you, these are conceptual things, not physical things, but we would simply not have the Internet we know of today without TCP/IP

So it boils down to the old libertarian argument over intellectual property, oddly enough also referred to as IP. :D

Yup, IRC was how 14 year olds downloaded porn in those days.
