From what I've been able to peace together, we are pretending to fight al Qaeda so that 9/11 never happens again, and pretending that the Taliban is just as serious a threat as al Qaeda, and if anyone calls "bullshit" on this we are told that we are there fighting for democracy and women's rights.

Now, however, the National Security Adviser to President Obama, former Marine Gen. James Jones has made a statement, conveniently buried by the friendly US media, about the estimated size of the present Al Qaeda danger in Afghanistan. Jones told Congress, “The al-Qaeda presence is very diminished. The maximum estimate is less than 100 operating in the country, no bases, no ability to launch attacks on either us or our allies.”

The latest Taliban=9/11 fantasy is a yarn spun wildly outward from the finding of a passport of an al Qaeda flunky who worked with suicide pilot Mohammed Atta in the same mountain area where, years later, a Taliban group operated. It's a stretch, but when you want to sell a war, it will do.

But selling the re-invasion of Afghanistan requires a repetition of Lie #1: that the original attack on the World Trade towers and the Pentagon were planned from Afghanistan's and Pakistan's mountains with the connivance of the Taliban.

It's not true, of course. The September 11 attack was neither organized nor directed from Afghanistan by the Taliban. In fact, as our BBC Report found, it was clear that the attack on my friends and co-workers was planned and carried out by al Qaeda operations in Falls Church, Virginia; Paris, France; Sarasota, Florida; Hamburg, Germany;— and, I repeat, funded and manned from Saudi Arabia. Neither the Sunshine State nor the Aryan namesake of the original beef patty sandwich were, nor are they now, convenient targets for a revenge attack by the 101st Airborne.

Is that what the Russians were fighting for too?

I think the main objectives were to..

1). Take the Tailban out of power..

2). Find Osama Bin Ladin

We accomplished 1 of the 2..

Under Obama.. I have no idea what our objectives are anymore. I don't know what are goals are or if we are even there to win.. Whatever winning might be.

Winning is a strategic position in the region.
Winning is continuing the farce of the WoT so the Constitution can be further shredded.
Winning is continuing to let Halliburton rip of the American taxpayer to the tune of a $397 markup per gallon of gasoline.
Winning is kickbacks to defense contractors by keeping them in full production in return for campaign contributions.

But I could be just a tad jaded...

You just linked "us" to an article titled "Know Thine Eneny"

Did you mean to do that, or were you playing "Merge thread monitor"?

Commentators often distinguish between Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Taliban,

It answers the original question well, though Ho, in his reason for reigning was more brief in saying they fight us because we are there. They being Taliban, AQ and "local militia"... - those not affiliated in any way with an organization or ideology other than being pissed off that we bomb their villages, kill their families, crops, animals... - the usual reasons...
