I think deep down Hersh believes he is getting the truth, and that is why he publishes his stories with no named sources. However it may be likely that they are feeding him propaganda on both sides.

Don't count Hersch out so fast. He's famous for getting insider info and go ahead and tell me ONE TIME where he's turned out to be incorrect. From the Mi Lai Massacre to the present day, it's partially down to his intel that we've known what's really going on in Gitmo all these years. It's how we know what's really been going in in Baghram and Uzbeckistan. And the man has clearly put his life on the line to bring truth to our doors.

No, don't count Hersch out so fast.

I think that might be what the OP is getting at...

That said, imo, he has earned the benefit of the doubt for his past reporting.

"There is a possibility that officials in the Department of Defense and the intelligence community strategically leak this information to Hersh and then use his report to gauge public reaction to their actions. They can continue to deny the report as they have in this case, but the seed is planted in the American consciousness"

Most likely. Even the horrors of Abu Graib were meant to be leaked out. That is why the lowlife order taking soldiers were instructed to take pictures of the torture. It was meant to instill fear in those who pay attention to what is going on.

If you watch him get interviewed he is always pretty indifferent and almost kind of annoyed, unless that is an act, I don't think the guy is in it for the prestige. But who knows.
