Was anybody else completely confused when they started sending the National Guard to Iraq? Am I wrong, but isn't that specifically not the purpose of the National Guard? To fight on foreign soil? Isn't the purpose of the National Guard specifically to guard the nation here in America? To help during national disasters and to defend against overthrows and such? Am I wrong about this? If not, how did this slide by without apparent notice?

It was noticed, just no one really cared it seemed since Bush can do whatever he wants and get away with it.

I believe the National Guard was created by the Militia Act of 1903. This act essentially both nationalized the state and local militias and mandated the National Guard as the Army and Air Force Reserves.
