WASHINGTON -- The glow from a health care triumph faded quickly for President Barack Obama on Sunday as Democrats realized the bill they fought so hard to pass in the House has nowhere to go in the Senate.

Speaking from the Rose Garden about 14 hours after the late Saturday vote, Obama urged senators to be like runners on a relay team and "take the baton and bring this effort to the finish line on behalf of the American people."

The problem is that the Senate won't run with it. The government health insurance plan included in the House bill is unacceptable to a few Democratic moderates who hold the balance of power in the Senate.

If the House healthcare bill becomes law, small businesses and the wealthiest, most productive Americans can expect to pay massive new taxes.

The bill also includes hidden fees and “excise” taxes that will fall heavily on the elderly.

Under the Pelosi bill, citizens reporting income over $500,000 and married couples earning more than $1 million would be slapped with a 5.4% surtax on all income above those thresholds.

The Wall Street Journal notes that “after taking into account the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, those people would face a marginal tax rate of 45%.”

Small businesses will also suffer.

Very small companies – those with payrolls with less than $500,000 – will be

Bullshit. The worst parts of the bill will pass, at a minumum. The public option is a red herring, because there will no longer be any private option left to consumers to decide how to insure themselves, and will tax, regulate, fine companies that try and reduce their risk pool, or charge higher rates to older consumers.

On top of that, what will likely happen is that the public option will kick in as premiums will predictably skyrocket due to less competition and higher regulations. (problem, reaction, solution)

Bottom line is, you will forced to pay much more for insurance, and the government will still be able to blame it on the free market and say it doesn't work.

"Corporate 1099-MISC Information Reporting (Page 344): Requires that 1099-MISC forms be issued to corporations as well as persons for trade or business payments. Current law limits to just persons for small business compliance complexity reasons. Also expands reporting to exchanges of property. "

Can anyone point me to the current IRS stipulations on barter? I was contimplating setting up a local barter group. Everything in this bill is evil.

We can only hope it's DOA.

My optimism isn't very high on this one.

The Dems want this. They want it bad. It has been their goal from the start.
All this hype about it being dead is targeted at those in opposition, to end the resistance. IMHO
It is going to be pushed through.

Damn, Pete beat me to the punch, again.

He's absolutely right, any and all talk of it being "DOA" is just a smokescreen designed to make opposition go away.

What distraction will they use to pass it in the Senate?

"...on behalf of the American people."

What an arrogant SOB.

This is complete tyranny. Ridiculous to say that the "American people" want this bullshit! Mob rule doesn't work. Democracy=FAIL.

1099-B? Look up "trade or business." That is key.

Don't incorporate, you should be fine.

Just 14 hours after House approval, President Obama charged ahead to get his signature healthcare reform pushed through the Senate by calling on everyone to "take up the baton and bring this effort to the finish line."

It's Christmas or bust.

New York Times: Apart from substantive hurdles, the Senate bill faces procedural ones; Mr. Reid cannot bring it to the floor for debate until he gets an analysis, or “score,” from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, expected later this week. The delay could push Senate consideration of the bill until after Thanksgiving, which could in turn make it very difficult for Congress to meet Mr. Obama’s goal of signing a health bill into law by the end of this year.

The timing is crucial. Administration officials say Mr. Obama wants to wrap up work on health care so that he can turn his attention to other legislative priorities, including passing an energy bill and revamping financial regulations. But White House officials also know that the closer the final vote comes to the November 2010 midterm Congressional elections, the more difficult it will be to pass legislation.

Sending members of Congress home over an extended Christmas break without a health care bill in hand could prove disastrous politically.

Why would it be more difficult? If his ideas are so great and the people want them so badly, then maybe he should wait until after November 2010 when the people overwhelmingly vote in more Democrats to show their support for his actions....

They want us to let our guard down, and take the pressure off our representatives. If anything, we need to step things up.

I seem to remember them saying that the Cap and Trade wouldn't make it out of the house, but it sure did. Now they're saying that won't make it through the Senate either. Don't trust anything they say.
