We all know that unemployment isn't 9.7% - it's more like 17-20% because the government changed the definition to currently receiving unemployment. Otherwise, you are not counted.

So, why would they want to extend unemployment payments by 14 weeks? That's just going to inflate the unemployment stats that they report.

Anyone know what's up with this?

There were several, like Larry Summers, who were against extending benefits. Maybe there's too much pressure from Congress (who are probably pestered by people surviving off those benefits).

Extending benefits extends reliance on the government to live... it is pushing their agenda. Of course they would want to do it.
