PORTLAND, Maine—With Tuesday's election, Maine becomes the fifth state to allow dispensaries where marijuana can be distributed to medical patients.

But medical marijuana advocates say Maine won't become like Los Angeles, where hundreds of dispensaries have popped up and come under critical scrutiny.

Ethan Nadelmann of the New York-based Drug Policy Alliance says Los Angeles is the "wild west West" of marijuana dispensaries.

He says Maine law requires that dispensaries be licensed by the state, while California law does not. He adds that Maine law narrowly defines medical conditions for which patients can be prescribed pot, while California allows doctors to recommend it for virtually any ailment.

Does anybody know what this "narrow list" of conditions are?

The problem is that there are so many different types of neurological and muscular conditions that cannabis alleviates I doubt they'd be able to include them all. I'm curious how specific they actually are.

In California, cannabis can be recommended for those who have trouble sleeping.. well essentially any disorder or condition can be detrimental to one's sleep. It can also be recommended to treat depression and anxiety. There are books that list hundreds of conditions for which cannabis helps alleviate the symptoms or even help treat the disease. But in California the trick is that you have to have been treated for the condition previously. You can't just walk in and say that you have anxiety and want to use cannabis to treat it, you have to have been treated for anxiety in the past. That is how doctors protect themselves, because many doctors here specialize in recommending cannabis so they cannot be a primary care physician for all of their patients.

Persistent nausea, vomiting, wasting syndrome or loss of appetite as a result of:
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) or the treatment thereof; or
Chemotherapy or radiation therapy used to treat cancer;
Heightened intraocular pressure as a result of glaucoma;
Seizures associated with a chronic, debilitating disease, such as epilepsy; or
Persistent muscle spasms associated with a chronic, debilitating disease, such as multiple sclerosis

And this new change adds to that list:
intractable pain, agitation of Alzheimer’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (“Lou Gehrig’s disease”).

Troubling sleeping? I may have to reconsider a move to Cali. :p
