I have a very liberal coworker that I enjoy talking politics with, and I'm thinking of getting him a 1 year subscription to Reason Magazine (https://ssl.drgnetwork.com/ecom/rsn/cgi/subscribe/order?org=RSN&publ=RS) for Christmas. Anybody here subscribe? What do you think?

I've been subscribed for nearly a couple years. I like it. Fresh topics and unafraid to go against libertarian grain at times. Has a very slight liberal lean, IMO. Doesn't at all come off as propaganda (nothing "kooky") and offers both short and long stories. They also offer their magazines online, with a one-month delay. You can check out last month's here (http://reason.com/issues/october-2009). Editors of Reason appear on MSM every now and again, Nick Gillespie in particular. There was a program where you could send one free printed issue to someone, but I can't find the link.

Reason Magazine has dicked Ron Paul like he is some sort of play toy. Thus, i don't trust them. This is NOT saying I don't agree w/ them from time to time. For instance, Weigle/schmiegel has just "come out" with a "surprisingly" positive article about Ron Paul, but that doesn't mean that he and his "kind" won't report THE PRECIOUS, as well as send the ring wraiths...

What is "here" and who is "they"????????????
Ask a f'in question for gawdsakes.
No offense intended of course, but seriously...
sack up "Precious".

I'm guessing "here" is the quoted link and "they" are the linked article's writers. As for Reason, the articles written in Paul's name was a significant (only?) blight on Paul's reputation, and a valid news story, but unless they uncovered any new news (they didn't) I do not see why they ran the story right before the election.

That said, it is probably the best popular libertarian magazine, especially from the beltway/left angle. The Freeman (http://www.thefreemanonline.org/)is another option. Personally I think what you can get online for free is enough.

Like this blogger here, I had a pretty good idea of who was to blame when that little scandal broke. I had a run-in with a couple of Lew's closeted bigot columnists when I was just getting into libertarianism (anarcho-capitalism, specifically). This is a fucking disgrace that Mr. Rockwell has yet to answer for.

I like Reason, but if someone got you a subscription to The Nation (liberal mag) would you actually read it? If you think he'll actually read it go for it. The subscription only costs like $12 last I checked.

If it was me, I'd give him some books. Start with Economics in One Lesson and Pauls Revolution Manifesto. That shouldn't be too shocking to the core, too fast. If you want, throw in Blowback, or something by Michael Scheuer.

I have a subscription and I love it. Don't get me wrong though, I was pretty pissed when they seemingly went after Ron Paul during the primaries, but they have definitely embraced him since. Just like the CATO Institute, who did everything they could to NOT support Ron Paul in the primaries, but now are embracing him.

Reason tends to be more of a mainstream libertarian (big L supporters) which may be why they were pushing for people to vote Libertarian instead of a Republican (Ron Paul). They tend to lean more traditional libertarian, whereas us Ron Paul supporters tend to lean more paleo-libertarian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolibertarianism). To some that may be a big enough difference to not like them (if they're picky), but I very much enjoy them.

Plus, they have Drew Carey Project (http://reason.tv/featuredvids/). That alone is enough for me to like them. :-)

Cato and Reason dropped the ball in 2007-2008 as the former libertarian organizations.

Cato was taken over by Rupert Murdoch and "endorsed" Ed Thompson while ignoring Ron Paul.

Reason attacked Ron Paul for the old newsletters, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

They finally have a libertarian candidate with a shot at the White House and they attack him.

While they did attack Ron Paul over the newsletters (I only recall one article), they still deliver the message of Liberty. If you are trying to introduce libertarianism to your friends, Reason would be one of the first things I would introduce. Obviously, there are other sources like articles from the Mises Institute and various books and websites, but I think Reason is witty enough to capture their attention long enough to understand some of the concepts.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still pretty upset about their lack of support around Ron Paul during the primaries, but I think the amount of pro-Ron Paul articles they have written in the past year should make up for it. But again, that's just me.

And I think both Reason and Cato are still libertarian organizations. They, for some dumb reason, decided not to support Ron Paul in the primaries in 2007. But they are both against the War on Terror, the War on Drugs, the bailouts, and everything else we believe in. Reason tends to be more for open borders than some Ron Paul supporters, but other than that, I don't know of an issue we disagree with Reason and Cato on.

And I know quite a few cato-donors and reason-subscribers that stopping being both of those because of what you just stated. So, No, I wouldn't get them a subscription.

OP:

Get your friend...

The Free Market from the Mises Institute.
Journal of Libertarian Studies.

I still think the Mises Institute should come out with a highly polished monthly magazine that focuses on all current political issues in a purely Austro-Libertarian perspective. I understand that all these people who contribute are Professor's so they may not have the time, but surely it is possible.....Ah well.
