Expressing concern that state government is hampering job creation and failing to protect seniors in a down economy, Ed Thompson announced he will run as a Republican against incumbent Kathleen Vinehout for the 31st State Senate district. The 31st State Senate district includes
all of Trempeauleau, Buffalo, Jackson and Pepin counties and parts of Monroe, Pierce, Dunn, Eau Claire, and Clark Counties.

“I cannot sit idly by while Madison turns this state’s economy upside down.

People are losing their jobs and struggling to get by, while the response from Madison has been to raise our taxes,” said Thompson. “The economy is already bad, but Madison is making things worse. The solution is clear; government must get out of the way of progress by reducing taxes on working families and the
people who provide jobs.”

Wisconsin dropped five spots to become the third worst state in the nation in which to do business according to Forbes Magazine, demonstrating Wisconsin’s worsening job climate.

Meanwhile the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance analysis shows that, due to recent tax increases, our state may rise to the sixth highest-taxed state in the nation, up from 11th highest. Wisconsin also has the ninth highest property taxes, making it difficult for struggling families and seniors on a fixed income to stay in their homes.

This year alone the Legislature passed over $5 billion in new taxes and fees on families and businesses to pay for a 6.8% increase in government spending.

Taxpayers will pay more for property taxes, phone taxes, garbage taxes, health care taxes, capital gains taxes, income taxes, and car insurance. Massive new taxes on Wisconsin employers are forcing them to cut costs and jobs.

Companies like Briggs & Stratton and Harley Davidson are cutting jobs in Wisconsin while expanding jobs in other states.

“My priorities will be to make Wisconsin a welcoming place for job creation, to stop tax increases in their tracks, to improve our rural economy and to ensure seniors can retire without the fear of financial ruin,” said Thompson. “I pledge to be an independent, common-sense legislator who will fight for smaller, more responsible government that works for the people, not a big-spending government that taxes people out of their jobs, businesses, and homes.”

Ed Thompson is the mayor of Tomah and owner of Mr. Ed’s Tee-Pee Supper Club.

In his first term as mayor, Thompson cut city expenses by 13%, eliminated a $4 million debt without raising taxes and improved services to the community. Known for his fierce independence and maverick style, Thompson ran for Governor as a Libertarian in 2002. Thompson has four children, eight grandchildren, and is a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

I like Ed. Hope he wins. Too bad I can't vote for him, but I would rue the day if I ever became a resident of Wisconsin. :p

Nice to see more Libertarians infiltrating the GOP ;)

He's a 9/11 truther too.

Wish he was running for a higher office like Senate or Congress though.

Why? Being a Senator in Wisconsin is arguably a more powerful position than being a Federal Senator or Congressman. He can work to nullify unconstitutional Federal Government mandates. Doubtful of the success however, since it is Wisconsin, but if more were to enter and win...you never know. Milwaukee and Madison are just a tiny bit of Wisconsin.

Thompson to run for state Senate

By Paul Medinger

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

TOMAH - Mayor Ed Thompson announced Tuesday he will run as a Republican for the 31st District state Senate seat now held by Kathleen Vinehout.

Thompson cited concerns about government growth, high taxes and a poor job climate as his reasons for attempting to oust the Alma Democrat in 2010.

"I guess I just can't sit idly by while Madison turns the state upside down," Thompson said Tuesday. "With taxes and budgets, we are seeing the biggest increases in history, and I am just fed up with it, and I hope to make a difference."

Thompson, the brother of former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, is in his second nonconsecutive term as Tomah mayor. He served from 2000-02 before mounting an unsuccessful campaign for governor in 2002 as a Libertarian against Gov. Jim Doyle and then-governor Scott McCallum.

He then recaptured the mayor post in April 2008 by nearly a 2-to-1 margin over the incumbent, Charles Ludeking.

Thompson said he has pondered a bid for the state Legislature for several years and has received encouragement and support to run. While declaring as a Republican, Thompson said he would make independent decisions.

"I am running as a Ron Paul Republican. If you follow (Paul's) record in (Washington) D.C., he has strictly followed the Constitution, not voting the line with either party," Thompson said. "Individual freedom and responsibility was my battle cry when I ran for governor, and if I win, I will use all I have to do just that."

Paul is a Republican congressman from Texas.

Thompson added he is concerned with the state's job losses, citing local cases of layoffs at the Toro and Cardinal IG plants in Tomah last year.

Vinehout said she is eager to debate the issues with Thompson.

"Ed is a great guy, and I look forward to being on the campaign trail with him," she said Tuesday.

"I read Ed's (campaign announcement) and ... I thought to myself that I really hope he is going to move past the familiar talking points of the Republican Party and Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce. We need to get beyond the talking points and engage in a serious discussion about specific solutions to these problems. I'm sure, with Ed, that will happen."

Vinehout said her priorities continue to be health care, school funding and the economy. "We have made some progress, but there is a lot of work left."

The 31st District includes all of Trempealeau, Buffalo, Jackson and Pepin counties, and parts of Monroe, Pierce, Dunn, Eau Claire and Clark counties.

Ed Thompson making state Senate bid

by Bob Hague on October 28, 2009

in Politics & Government

Former candidate for governor, Ed Thompson is making a bid for the legislature. Saying he’s fed up with new taxes and spending, the longtime Libertarian is launching a campaign for the state Senate, and drawing inspiration from the most libertarian of national Republican politicians. “I’m a Ron Paul Republican,” says Thompson. “I think the people who know who Dr. Ron Paul is will understand that quite clearly.”
