The sad thing is, Newt's whole "Contract with America" thing back in 1994 - to the extent that the GOP delivered on its campaign promises - was just about the most shining moment in the long, statist history of the Republican Party (with the possible exception perhaps of some aspects of 1920s Harding/Coolidge economic policy, such as not intervening too much to try and "fix" the post-World War I recession).

Or, maybe the saddest thing is that he co-authored that alternate history series on the Civil War... and Lincoln still ended up winning.
