Thank you for supporting our fundraiser!

Here are screen shots of what the upgrade should look like.

http://www.vbulletin.com/index.php?do=screenshots

VBulletin 4.0 is coming out soon and it's got some neat new features that will be rolled into it.

The VB 4.0 software has not been released yet and I do not know how soon that will be. Supposedly it will be out this quarter.

Blogs, Site Articles, and Events Management, oh my!

Example of what our front page may look like.

Looks like it will be a good addition.

I'll probably hold a chip in for this upgrade. Although it won't be $80,000 like AntiWar.com.

How much would it cost to add being unbannable to my account? :D

I don't see the biggest asset to controlling the spam of threads; an option for the starter of a thread to delete off-topic remarks. I'm willing to bet the vast majority of topic starters would be fair in their use of this power. Furthermore, a spammer wouldn't be nearly so likely to engage in the obnoxious behavior in the first place if he knew the spam was likely headed for file 13. Granting the OP power to delete spam within their threads would save everyone a lot of hassle and vastly improve the readability of threads.

How about budgeting in a hot swapable hardware RAID? There are some that support 4 drives that won't break the bank... SATA... be sure to budget in an extra drive or two, though...

This one is $358 (before drives) for example... supports up to 8 drives, hot swap, hot spare, mostly good reviews and the low reviews seem to be related to people using Seagate drives.

Don't think people would mind chipping in for that too.

Hey, they have a "thanks" feature on the GIM vbulletin forum. i didn't like it at first but it really grew on me, and cut down on the "+1" types of posts.

Cool.

I visit a forum that allows users to rate the reputation of each other - really cool way to compliment others on their great posts or provide criticism as warranted. The user being given the feedback knows who sent it to them, to keep everything out in the open and to encourage wise usage of the feature.

Maybe something like that could be added?

I don't know what kind of backend hardware wise is on the site but I have no complaints about perfromance.

To speculate I say SAS disks are the future. Im a fan of the Dell R series servers with the MD3000 setup. Chain MD1000s behind the 3000 if you want a lot of disk spindles for database work. Im not a fan of SANs for low latency items like SQL and websites but with file hosting they are hard to beat. I like the Equalogic stuff for that.

Just musing.

In all seriousness, it would be nice to see a karma rating system per post similar to that of http://www.SlashDot.org (http://www.SlashDot.org) Essentially each comment/post is rated by everyone's peers. Then you can set the threshold of which posts you want to see. It's VERY handy for weeding out nonsense and such.

`Lorem ipsum dolor' is the first part of a nonsense paragraph sometimes used to demonstrate a font. It has been well established that if you write anything as a sample, people will spend more time reading the copy than looking at the font. The ``gibberish'' below is sufficiently like ordinary text to demonstrate a font but doesn't distract the reader. Hopefully.

Rick Pali submits the following from Before and After Magazine, Volume 4 Number 2.:

[quote]

After telling everyone that Lorem ipsum, the nonsensical text that comes with PageMaker, only looks like Latin but actually says nothing, I heard from Richard McClintock, publication director at the Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, who had enlightening news:

"Lorem ipsum is latin, slightly jumbled, the remnants of a passage from Cicero's _de Finibus_ 1.10.32, which begins 'Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit...' [There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain.]. [de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC, is a treatise on the theory of ethics very popular in the Renaisance.]

"What I find remarkable is that this text has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since some printed in the 1500s took a galley of type and scambled it to make a type specemin book; it has survived not only four centuries of letter-by-letter resetting but even the leap into electronic typesetting, essentially unchanged except for an occational 'ing' or 'y' thrown in. It's ironic that when the then-understood Latin was scrambled, it became as incomprehensible as Greek; the phrase 'it's Greek to me' and 'greeking' have common semantic roots!"

* * *

I would chip in a good $50+ for some yummy sushi.

I meant a "help" thread if there were going to be some new tricks or options to learn with the overall format of RPF.

I read earlier in the thread that some "oldtimers" or computer novices have a habit to fear change, just to ease them along a bit so they don't feel like we are abandoning them...:)

I will be renewing my annual just as soon as I can. I dropped near $500 into a job the last 6 weeks that was supposed to pay out on Friday, but I still haven't heard a whisper. Yep, spoke with a web guy about 8 or 9 days ago.

He said he recommends holding off til 4.0.2. (Just saw that they released it 2 days ago.) Will give him a call.

Many large sites had been holding off from upgrading because it has been pretty buggy if you did a little research. :p Looks like 250 bugs have been fixed between 4.0.1 and 4.0.2!

Have no worries, I still have the monies in my paypal account.
