KABUL (Reuters) - An Afghan soldier on guard at a joint base with U.S. troops shot dead two American servicemen and wounded two others as they slept, a provincial official said on Saturday.

Shahedullah Shahed, spokesman for the governor of Wardak province west of Kabul, said the shooting took place after a combined team of Afghan and U.S. forces had returned from a joint operation late on Friday.

"The Americans were in the middle of sleep when an Afghan soldier on duty opened fire on them," Shahed said.

"We have no clue as to why he shot them."

A statement from NATO-led forces said two American soldiers died from injuries suffered in a "hostile attack" in eastern Afghanistan on Friday. A press officer for the Western troops said he could give no further details of the incident.

"We have no clue as to why he shot them."
That explains so much.

Perhaps it is because we have invaded his country and are killing his people.
Just a wild guess.

That is exactly right, CLUELESS.

Just moments ago, I was venting about this very thing.

Twitter, for me -- could they have come UP with a more childish name -- is like lifting the lid on a pot so it doesn't boil over. THANK YOU, American Ingenuity.

USA should completely withdraw its soldiers from Afghanistan and bring them back home.

USA is fighting an endless & losing battle in Afghanistan. The soldiers are just waiting there to be shot dead or blown up by Al-qaeda militants.

Heavy US losses in Afghan battle

Eight American soldiers and two Afghan troops have been killed in the deadliest attack on coalition troops for more than a year, officials say.

The battle happened in Nuristan province in the remote east of the country when military outposts were attacked, a Nato statement said.

The Taliban said it carried out the attack. Reports say local officials including a police chief were captured.

Violence has escalated in the east as insurgents relocate from the south.

"My heart goes out to the families of those we have lost and to their fellow soldiers who remained to finish the fight... Both the US and Afghan soldiers fought bravely together "

Col Randy George
US area commander

About 300 militants attacked one outpost at the foot of a hill, before turning their fire on a US base on higher ground, attacking from two sides, a provincial police chief said.

One Nato spokesman called it a "complex attack in a difficult area".

US jets carried out air strikes in response.

"Coalition forces effectively repelled the attack and inflicted heavy enemy casualties while eight Isaf and two ANSF [Afghan National Security Forces] members were killed," the Nato statement said.

A child would understand this.

But then, a child is guileless.
