No definitive word.
But I have been in the industry for 7 years.
DOS attacks are continual against any popular site these days, but this looked simply like server overload from a mass horde of donors and thermometer watchers
hosting companies also have a bad habit blaming attacks when the real issue is bad server configs, mismanaged, etc.
It looked like the max connections simply maxed out, the server was still up it just couldn't answer all the incoming requests on the http server.

If they wanted to create real trouble, they could have kept going much longer.
I think it was traffic overload.
This is why I have been telling everyone to hurry up and get their donations in before tonight so in case there's another crash, the donations don't get clocked in as Q4.

If it was really an attack, it would have been down for hours. Promise.

I posted ping logs of the actual server last night during the downtime. Lew's bloggers are really wrong in this case, as I was able to obtain a response every single time. The only thing that was problematic was the web server itself (which is an application layer on top of the hardware and OS), which was obviously under heavy load--NOT a distributed denial-of-service attack--during key points of the donation drive.
Nothing necessarily nefarious; the admins just needed to reboot the webserver because it was being bombed WITH DONATIONS.
I say this as someone who's managed servers and web presences for years.

An alternate theory:
Any "1337 Haax00or" with a botnet share these days is all about the blackmail scheme. It usually starts off with an email, that says, if you don't deposit some amount of money in this Chinese account by this time, I'm going to take your severs off line.
This has happened more than once at the company I work for, and its pretty much the same every time....during a big promo. This fund raising drive was a gold target for these blackmailers.
Basically, you wait for the DDOS to start, and when it does, you analyze traffic and start null routing entire /16's until your site comes back up.

It was an attack. These people come and attack us because they hate our freedom of religion, they hate our freedom for women, and they hate our freedoms in general. They were obviously radical extremist terrorists. We are the brightest beacon for freedom in the world. We must stay on offense against these terrorists or they'll follow us home again! And next time it could be in the form of a mushroom cloud...

The push was causing a lot of traffic. So often people confuse heavy traffic for an "attack".

I think it was an attack by Ron's supporters spamming him with their filthy fiat money.
