McDonald—who considered himself a traditional Democrat "cut from the cloth of Jefferson and Jackson"[4]—was known for his conservative views, even by Southern standards. In fact, one study named him the second most conservative member of either chamber of Congress since 1937.

Even though Ron Paul is a Republican, I've always thought that the Democratic Party, being the older party, had many great members "back in the day." Larry McDonald obviously was one of the greatest.
Does anyone know of any other great Jeffersonian Democrats in the 20th century? Also, does anyone know who McDonald's allies were (or are, given that some of his colleagues are still in Congress)? I've heard there was a group of anti-statist Democrats called the "boll weevils"-anyone know any more info about them?
