"It's been nine months since California announced their intentions to create new standards (http://news.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/01/07/1946223&tid=513) on energy-consuming televisions in their state, but yesterday the California Energy Commission finally released the first draft of the regulations (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iOdSjBeSBXoLiftQRTMLX92Eu8ggD9AQ15EG0). (More information straight from the horse's mouth (http://www.energy.ca.gov/appliances/2009_tvregs/index.html).) If you live in another state, you may be unfamiliar with California's history of mandating power usage among anything from dishwashers to washing machines to other household appliances (http://www.energy.ca.gov/2009publications/CEC-400-2009-013/CEC-400-2009-013.PDF). This has also led to California pushing to ban incandescent light bulbs (http://politics.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/01/31/1826230&tid=61). From their FAQ on TV Efficiency Standards (http://www.energy.ca.gov/appliances/tv_faqs.html): 'The proposed standards have no effect on existing televisions. If approved, they would only apply to TVs sold in California after January 1, 2011. The first standard (Tier 1) would take effect January 1, 2011, and reduce energy consumption by average of 33 percent. The second measure (Tier 2) would take effect in 2013 and, in conjunction with Tier 1, reduce energy consumption by an average of 49 percent.' The Draft from December 2008 is available on their site (http://www.energy.ca.gov/2008publications/CEC-400-2008-028/CEC-400-2008-028-SD.PDF) (PDF, with a shorter 'Just the Facts' flier (http://www.energy.ca.gov/appliances/TV_Standards_Facts.pdf) for those of you without two hours to burn). There's no indication whether that's what they're going with, or if it's been updated since then."

Whatever happened to Private Property rights? Whatever happened to Natural Law? Anyways, I say let California do what they want, the mass exodus will make them turn around eventually, or when they go bankrupt once again....Could be wrong though.

It's up to the people, it's their choice whether to stay or not, but this is starting to get a little ridiculous.
