YouTube - Joey Baer, Concerns and Recommendations (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOiEC3RgoxU)
YouTube - A Message for Joey Baer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70g3si5aKFo)
My guess is most of you clicking on those videos thought "WTF?"
The reason I posted those two videos is because "WTF?" is the feeling I and millions of Deaf folks like me have every single day when accessing multimedia on-line from the mainstream news sites, mainstream blogger sites, and YouTube.
Technology has made life for Deaf folks like me a lot easier (text messages, AIM, videophones, etc.), and I couldn't be more thankful. Yet, at the same time, the explosion of online media content and podcasts has left Deaf folks out in the dark. Despite numerous requests that I and many other people like me have made to various media conglomerates and even the Campaign For Liberty (which continues to insult me by not even replying to my numerous cordial requests for them to subtitle their own videos), it is like they are the ones who are deaf, not me and the millions of folks in this country with hearing losses.
H.R. 3101 is now being batted around. It's called The Twenty-first Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2009 (http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/111_HR_3101.html). I am torn about this bill because I would much prefer that people out of the kindness of their heart went ahead and subtitled or provided transcripts to their content. At the same time, I have been fighting to spread awareness about this issue for years now, and I really haven't gotten anywhere. At all. If this bill passes, I fear there may be more resentment towards Deaf folks, but if nobody is willing to listen or make accomodations.....
I am a deaf guy who has some residual hearing and can "follow the bouncing ball", so I have been subtitling all of the Ron Paul videos out there, with the help of one or two other supporters on this forum and with the help of RonPaul.Com's provided transcripts. I feel that C4L should be taking the lead on this issue and subtitling their own videos, so that I can focus on all the other videos that aren't being subbed. It goes both ways, as I have written a blog post encouraging Deaf folks to subtitle their own Vlogs (http://deafronpaul.blogspot.com/2009/09/why-deaf-people-should-subtitle-their.html).
J.J. (one of the guys in my keeper fantasy football league) subtitled his Vlogs for the Hearing folks and explained why he felt Deaf vloggers should offer subtitles and/or transcripts.
Why vloggers should offer subtitles and/or transcripts? (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3227992418283640682&ei=vIizSpTZBafEqgL0ifT2AQ&q=Vlogs+subtitled&hl=en#)
This guy provides transcripts for his videos. even though there are no subtitles:

My intention of posting this is to inform you all of the push from Deaf folks around the country to support H.R. 3101. I would like to know how you all feel about this bill. I haven't made up my mind yet about this. I would like for people reading this post to take away the understanding that they should be considerate and provide transcripts for comments they vocalize on YouTube. It is a really frustrating issue, and I wanted to shed some light on this. I would also like for as many of you who agree with me to bug C4L about subtitling their videos. I find it absolutley ridiculous that a Deaf guy is subtitling C4L videos for them! I would rather be focusing my time and efforts on subtitling videos NOT produced by C4L.
Thanks for hearing (:D) me out!
