The war over the Washington Redskins -- the most offensive team name in professional sports -- might finally go to the U.S. Supreme Court.

A group of American Indians is asking the highest court in the land to cancel the trademarks on the Redskins team name and logos -- due to the fact that they're extremely defamatory toward Native Americans.

The American Indian group has been fighting this battle since 1992. They won a ruling in 1999 ... but the decision was defeated soon after by judges who decided they waited too long to bring their case to the courts.

The Redskins -- worth a reported $1.5 billion -- have been using the name since 1933.

Now, the Native American group wants SCOTUS to review the lower court decision -- and finally force Washington to understand why naming an NFL team after the color of someone's skin could be offensive.

I understand why it would be offensive, and the double standards in our government are absurd (Could you imagine a team called the "Texas Blackskins"? and not a single black person was on the team?)

I think they went after the Cleveland Indians a few years back as well.

It's my understanding that the Native Americans have a hell of a lot bigger problems on their reservations than the name of a baseball or football team. I'd be pretty pissed off if I was a Native American and my "leadership" was going after a football team rather than looking to resolve a substantial problem.

Forget the name, please change the owner. Im tired of watching Dan Snyder destroy my favorite football team to make a buck.

Oh and its just a name. It has a long history which is not rooted in any racism whatsoever. Not to mention that surveys conducted in the past (assuming they weren't slanted in some form) showed that less than 10% of Native Americans found the name to be offensive. Looks like just more PC garbage to force one's opinion on others. It's a privately owned franchise in a privately owned professional sports league. Don't like the name? Don't support it with your money or viewership.
