In the marine trades that's called "stacked".

If they are "stacked" with skeleton crew to tend the vessel and "keep the fires up" it's called "hot stacked". Crew the vessel up and she's ready to sail.

If it's completely shut down and locked up, it's "cold stacked".

Lots of times a cold stacking is a death sentence for ship.

Amazing. Oil tankers are offshore full as well, just sitting keeping 70 dollar oil where it is. I guess global warming will take care of itself.

I have a ghost fleet about a mile upriver from my house (http://www.aerial-photographer.com/gallery/large/_F1N9766.jpg) here in Virginia, but it's not that big. The picture of the light it gives off was impressive.

James river? If so I think those ships are government owned Merchant Marine and military ships.
