View Full Version : Why Is Ron Paul Not Using Twitter?

Just wondering why Obama has over two million followers, Palin has Beck as a follower as well as Mikey Steele and Newt... and Ron Paul has zero following.

The media seems to be enamored with Palin and her whopping 28,633 followers...

Dr. Paul could send the weekly update via tweets?

I do not tweet, but would reconsider if...

Twitter is lame.

Ron Paul's credibility is directly linked to the fact that he is not one to fall for every faddish distraction to come down the pike.

I'd think less of the man if someone dug up a video of him talking like Jerry Reed on a CB radio back in 1978.

Honestly, I think Twitter is vastly mis-abused by 90% of the population that uses it. Those folks view it as AIM on steroids, and nothing more than a "status" update to people following you. But when harnessed correctly, Twitter is an unbelievable resource for spreading links and information to people. I bashed it endlessly until I actually tried it. When I figured out what I could do with it to spread the freedom message, I got some pretty good results. Some people following me have begun to question things that they rarely, if ever, did in the past.

The key to Twitter is tweeting links to relevant news articles and things like that. If people like it enough that they Retweet your message, and their base of followers is in the hundreds and thousands, you've all of a sudden got a very large group of people being exposed to the freedom message, or at least parts of it.

I used to be into facebook, but I think facebook is FAR more useless than Twitter. When Twitter ends up being harnessed correctly, watch out! I sincerely believe it is not a fad. So I am in the camp that believes someone from C4L should have a Twitter page set up. If that were to happen, information would travel MUCH faster. Examples include TV appearences that are only learned about by clicking refresh on the C4L site for updates. I'm sure some people utilize RSS feeds and don't have to deal with this, but I really think C4L and Ron's congressional office are missing the boat, along with the supporters here who diss Twitter.

Again, I 100% agree that 90 to 95% of the base that uses it is using it in a cringe-inducing way. I'm guilty of doing the same with posting about Phillies or Eagles games or things of that nature, but the fans that follow me because of my Philly posts are all of a sudden exposed to my links to relevant Ron Paul stuff and relevant news articles about Obama + Foriegn Policy/Civil Liberties.

Just my 2 cents.

Here's a Twitter search result page from the terms "Ron Paul" to get an idea of the type of tweets with his name.

I do NOT want to read what you did all day.

Twitter is a GIANT waste of time.
Tweet sounds extremely lame.

In conclusion, twitter sucks.

I can't even imagine or want Dr. Paul to try to sum up his thoughts in a 140characters or less. Brevity is not generally his strong suit.

Some of you guys are still missing the point. It's not going to be Dr. Paul tweeting. It's going to be a staffer on C4L tweeting "Dr. Paul to be on the Glenn Beck show at 5:15 today to talk about Healthcare" or "Dr. Paul's latest article found here at tinyurl.com/HRXLEX". That's less than 140 characters. I don't disagree that there are useless tweets from the vast majority of the population using the service, such as "hey, I'm taking a dump!". Dumb indeed. Just because a majority of the population isn't using it in the most effective way possible doesn't mean it's terrible and useless.

Also, YOU control who you follow. You don't want to read lame tweets, you'll never see them. If Twitter is so dumb, multi-billionaires like Mark Cuban and Richard Branson would not be utilizing it. Instead, Cuban is off giving speeches to reporters about how to harness it, while other people are writing about how using twitter (http://www.mathewingram.com/work/2009/04/01/twitter-a-workshop-for-journalists/) led them to get more hits on a particular story than they ever would have gotten without the story.

If social networking sites like facebook and myspace had not been harnessed and successfully used towards spreading Ron Paul's message while he was running for President in 2008, we would not have gotten nearly close to the heights we achieved during the campaign. I strongly encourage folks to give Twitter a shot, no matter how stupid sounding the name is and how poorly it is being used by a majority of the population.

Here is a link to powerpoint slides (http://www.slideshare.net/mathewi/twitter-workshop-for-journalists)showing how to harness Twitter. Note that 42% of users are between the ages of 35 to 49. The guy in the powerpoint slide also wrote that if you replace "Twitter" with "Talking to People", it doesn't sound as dumb. The phone and AIM are also tools that can be used effectively or stupidly.

There should be a bill passed that says "If you cant tweet the entirety of the bill (140 characters) you cant bring it to a vote" lol

LOL. Nothing would get passed, and that may be a good thing.

C4L DOES have a Twitter page after all. 8,000+ followers and I never knew about it.

Regardless of what you personally think of twitter, it is is a a great tool that is being underutilized... The number of people he could reach with a request to call their congressman for a particular bill would be unheard of.

Twitter haters get off your high horse and realize that it has potential for our movement. I use social networking sites for promoting liberty and essentially nothing else.

This is true, but he/his staff can easily hyperlink to his Texas Straight Talk, CFL blog post, or speech from the house floor... or YouTube video.... etc. etc.

Ron Paul needs to get a staffer on Facebook and Twitter.

He needs to build up his facebook network like Sarah Palin.
