“There is a concern,” she added. “What does the president want to talk about? All I’ve heard is vague generalities.”

Dean is not alone in her concern.

Some conservatives across the country, driven by radio pundits and bloggers, are urging schools and parents to boycott the address. They say Obama is using the opportunity to promote a political agenda and is overstepping the boundaries of federal involvement in schools.

“As far as I am concerned, this is not civics education — it gives the appearance of creating a cult of personality,” said Oklahoma state Sen. Steve Russell. “This is something you’d expect to see in North Korea or in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.”

After hearing some of these Obama supporters, the brain-washing cult idea might not be so far fetched.

YouTube - I Pledge! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqcPA1ysSbw)

At about 3:15, "I pledge to be of service to Barak Obama."

At about 4 minutes, "I pledge to be a servant to our president."

Note that they don't mention the Constitution.

Oh, this is totally what they are trying to do. This guy in the article nails it...

If some schools hadn't have started threatening the parents if they pulled their children, this would have not amounted to much.

I've been away for a couple of days - got links? I had not heard that. I'm going to call our schools and see if they're participating.

Probably topics:

1. Get your Swine Flu Vaccine - TELL YOUR PARENTS!
2. The Department of Education's Arne Duncan is awesome, love him.
3. Get good grades.
4. Reach your educational goals.
5. Go to college.
6. Support me and your country, or maybe just me.

Apparently he has one speech for the K-6 kids and another for 7th-12th graders. I'm very interested to hear what he says to each of them. Hopefully it will be on youtube for somewhere.

Will this be on national television or is it some channel specific for schools?

Regardless of whether I agree or not with the President on some issues, I like the idea of having him speak to my kids to motivate them to work and study. I don't see the harm in that.

Barack Obama is not the first president to address school children.

Having been out of the loop the last few days, this is the first I have heard about this issue. Looking at the primary grade extension activities it does have a ring of cult of personality indoctrinating. From the upper grades I could definately see this being the bridge activity to a youth core follow up ( and quite possibly at the primary level as well).

It is hard to argue with the premise of what they are doing, ecouraging children to be successful in school. However, the danger of allowing this to become acceptable outweighs any possible benefits. The air of anticipation of a special event that a generation of school children will participate in strictly to speak to them regarding their responsibilty will give the President a demi-god status in the eyes of many in a future generation (speaking of the youngest ones here).

THe fact that they are seemingly making this a demand to attend is flat out wrong. This is why homeschooling should be the norm and not the exception. If conservatives were really up in arms regarding their children, then they should be responsible enough to educate those souls they brought into this world.

Every time I see the phrase... "Be the change" the first thing that comes to mind is Chevy Chase in Caddyshack:
