I've been compiling a list of links relating to the swine flu. Mostly for the vaccine. If you have links to add post them in this thread. I did not post infowars or prisonplanet links because most do not cite a source. If someone wants to add them in the thread go ahead.

I just wanted to create an easily accessible reference point for folks to keep track of stuff.

I keep thinking about how different articles interrelate and I wanted to be able to easily cross-reference them. For instance if you look at the article about the "severe form of swine flu" and then at the mercola article about the nerve disease the parallels are kind of striking-- to me, anyway, as I tend to be sort of paranoid.

Yawn...

A friend of mine got swine flu and she said it wasn't that bad.

I got flu about 4 years ago - It put me down for about 4 days. Vomiting, dehydration, sweating... Just getting to the bathroom to dump the bowl and get more water was a total PITA! Walking was a problem. Don't dismiss this. At the same time, I'm not running out for a flu shot either.

Medical Marijuana Could Cure H1N1 Swine Flu

Medical Marijuana Could Cure H1N1 Swine Flu

Chicago : While medical marijuana has garnered a great deal of attention lately in helping patients deal with chronic pain, Melamede has another application in mind; he believes it can curb death risk from the swine flu.

The approach relies on the principle that the chemicals in marijuana known as cannabinoids have a dampening effect on the immune system. Melamede said doctors may be able to take advantage of this effect to curb the risk of death from the immune system overdrive that resulted in many of the deaths of young adults during the 1918 influenza pandemic -- a scenario that some worry could occur once more if swine flu were to become more virulent.

It's a controversial approach -- and few infectious disease experts believe health officials will be quick to approve marijuana prescriptions for sick kids. Dr. Len Horovitz, a pulmonary specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, is one expert who is troubled by the implications of "giving out THC like water."

"I don't think many parents would want their kids 'on drugs' for a mild, flu-like illness," he said, "and it's sure to raise hackles with the anti-drug people."

Still, Cannabis Science, an emerging pharmaceutical cannabis company of which Melamede is president and CEO, is working on an edible form of medicinal marijuana that its officials think will help treat many infectious diseases, swine flu included. Last month, the company announced its intention to apply to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's fast track approval process in the hope of making its anti-flu lozenge available for a possible second wave of swine flu.

Melamede said he has already tried the approach himself. In February, when he contracted a nasty flu -- a bout he suspects was related to the H1N1 swine flu virus -- he said he took medicinal marijuana to help his body fight it off.

When you catch the flu, your immune system launches a massive attack on the virus that causes excessive inflammation. This is where the runny nose, sore throat and achiness come from.

While it is necessary for fighting off the virus, this overwhelming inflammation can start to kill your own cells and, if it gets out of hand, it can lead to organ failure and death.

When inflammation goes off the handle, the body releases endocannabinoids, which are natural chemicals that suppress the immune system, taking down the inflammation before it does more harm than good. This endocannabinoid system, as it's called, is one of the many systems responsible for maintaining balance and health in the body.

In more severe strains of the flu, like avian flu, the endocannabinoid system can't always keep up. When this happens, the organs, particularly the lungs, fail.

"They die not from the virus itself but from their own immune response," Melamede said.
Curbing Immune Response With Cannabis

This is where, according to Cannabis Science, marijuana comes in. Because the marijuana plant contains natural, plant-based cannabinoids, called phytocannabinoids, giving cannabis to someone with the flu supplements their body's endocannabinoid system and helps take down the inflammation.

"Contemporary antiviral medical technology is currently inadequate to meet the world's immediate challenges," Melamede said in a press release issued last week. "We believe that cannabis extract-based medicines can reduce influenza deaths."

Thanks! There's so much coming now I can't keep on top of it. Here's something interesting I picked up this morning:

Swine flu pandemic: How will it impact Ecuador and South America vs. North America? (http://www.naturalnews.com/027109_Ecuador_swine_flu_America.html)

(NaturalNews) Living in Ecuador, I've overheard many discussions about the swine flu pandemic and its possible impact on Ecuador, South America and Central America. This article offers an analysis of likely scenarios based on what has been observed so far with the behavior of the swine flu around the world.

When considering the potential impact on Ecuador, the most important thing to realize about swine flu is that the number of people dying from swine flu exposure is quite small. This indicates the current mild state of the virus, indicating that unless it mutates into a significantly more virulent strain, the total number of fatalities will likely remain quite low (perhaps 75,000 or so in the U.S., making it roughly 2.5 times more deadly than a typical flu season if you believe CDC numbers).

Those currently dying from the swine flu in the United States tend to have two things in common:

#1) Obesity

#2) Severe vitamin D deficiency

Both of these conditions are rampant in North America, and they both contribute to greatly increased risk of a fatality from the swine flu. The mechanisms are fairly straightforward: Obesity is an inflammatory condition that contributes to respiratory inflammation typically leading to a bacterial pneumonia that kills many victims. Vitamin D deficiency creates a physiological environment in which the virus can spread easily while inciting the "cytokine storm" response that leads to fatal respiratory infections.

North America is unique in the world in suffering from very high rates of both obesity and vitamin D deficiency. South America, on the other hand, has far lower rates of both. In Ecuador (and Vilcabamba in particular), children, teens and adults still spend a considerable number of hours playing outdoors. Volleyball games are part of the culture there, and due to the near-perfect climate in many areas, a considerable portion of the population spends time walking outdoors (to the shop, to the farm, to the Sunday market, to church, etc.). Many people also don't own vehicles, so walking or bicycling is still a common form of transportation in many areas.

The upshot of all this is that few Ecuadorians are vitamin D deficient. And relatively few are overweight or obese. This makes the risk of a runaway swine flu pandemic extremely small in Ecuador. Other countries like Brazil and Peru have similarly low risk due to the enhanced health and outdoor lifestyles of their populations.

In South America, there also remains a culture of eating many locally-grown plants (in home gardens, etc.) and medicinal herbs (such as Hierba Luisa tea or local Ecuadorian Horchata, which is made from as many as 30 different medicinal plants). The anti-viral properties of these herbs and plants are quite strong, and this provides the people of Ecuador with natural protections against many forms of influenza. Simply eating and drinking the local foods and beverages is, all by itself, a form of medicinal protection against swine flu.

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 - WHO Update 69
------------------------------------
Weekly update:
As of 4 Oct 2009, worldwide there have been more than 375 000 laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 and more than 4500 deaths reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). As many countries have stopped counting individual cases, particularly of milder illness, the case count is significantly lower than the actually number of cases that have occurred. The WHO is actively monitoring the progress of the pandemic through frequent consultations with the WHO Regional Offices and member states and
through monitoring of multiple sources of data.

In the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, transmission of influenza virus and rates of influenza-like-illness (ILI) continue to increase marking an unusually early start to fall and winter influenza season in many countries. Geographically widespread influenza is being reported throughout North America, with the United States reporting ILI levels elevated above the seasonal baseline for the past month and Mexico reporting a high intensity of respiratory diseases for the past 3 weeks. In Canada, although overall ILI activity remains low, focal increases have been reported in the western part of Canada. In Europe and Central and Western Asia, early transmission of influenza virus continues to increase in many countries, with more intense focal activity being reported in a few.

National or regional ILI levels remained elevated above the baseline in parts of the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland and Scotland), Ireland, and Israel. In Ireland, a high intensity of respiratory diseases has been reported for the past 2 weeks, with the highest rates of ILI reported among children aged 5-14 years old. In addition to Ireland and Israel, widespread geographic spread of influenza virus is also now being reported in Belgium, the Netherlands, and
Cyprus. At least 10 countries in the region are also reporting an increasing trend in respiratory diseases activity. In Japan, influenza activity continues to be elevated above the seasonal epidemic threshold since week 33, most recently in the large population centers.

In the tropical regions of the Americas and Asia, influenza virus transmission persists, however influenza activity remained variable. Geographically widespread to regional influenza activity continues to be reported throughout the tropical region of the Americas without a consistent overall trend (and increasing trend in parts of the Caribbean, and decreasing in much of tropical Central and South America). High intensity respiratory diseases activity was reported in Columbia, Cuba, and El Salvador, and moderate health care impact
was experienced in many countries; 2 countries, Barbados and St. Lucia, reported severe health care impact. As influenza transmission slowly declines in many parts of South and Southeast Asia, several countries are reporting geographically regional spread (India, Bangladesh, and Thailand) or localized spread (Sri Lanka and Myanmar) of influenza activity; and most countries in the region have reported experiencing a low health care impact since late September [2009].

In the temperate regions of the southern hemisphere, influenza transmission has largely subsided (Chile, Argentina, and New Zealand) or continues to decline substantially (South Africa and Australia).

All pandemic H1N1 2009 influenza viruses analyzed to date have been antigenically and genetically similar to A/California/7/2009-like pandemic H1N1 2009 virus. See below for a detailed laboratory surveillance update.

Weekly update (Virological surveillance data): see
http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/laboratory09_10_2009/en/index.html

Systematic surveillance conducted by the Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN), supported by the WHO Collaborating Centres and other laboratories, continues to detect sporadic incidents of H1N1 pandemic viruses that show resistance to the antiviral oseltamivir. To date, 31 resistant pandemic H1N1 influenza viruses have been detected and characterized worldwide. All of these viruses show the same H275Y mutation that confers resistance to the antiviral oseltamivir, but not to the antiviral zanamivir. Worldwide, more than 10 000 clinical specimens (samples and isolates) of the
pandemic H1N1 virus have been tested and found to be sensitive to oseltamivir.

*Countries in temperate regions are defined as those north of the Tropic of Cancer or south of the Tropic of Capricorn, while countries in tropical regions are defined as those between these 2 latitudes.

Qualitative indicators (Week 29 to Week 39: 13 Jul - 27 Sep 2009)

The qualitative indicators monitor: the global geographic spread of influenza, trends in acute respiratory diseases, the intensity of respiratory disease activity, and the impact of the pandemic on health care services.

Laboratory-confirmed cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 as officially reported to the WHO by States Parties to the IHR (2005) as of 4 Oct 2009. Map of affected countries and deaths: see
http://gamapserver.who.int/h1n1/cases-deaths/h1n1_casesdeaths.html.

The countries and overseas territories/communities that have newly reported their first pandemic (H1N1) 2009 confirmed case(s) since the last Web update (Number 68) as of 4 Oct 2009 are: Tajikistan.

Cumulative totals as of 4 Oct 2009:

Region / Cases* / Deaths
WHO Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) / 1238 / 2 70
WHO Regional Office for the Americas (AMRO) / 146016 / 3292
WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) / 12861 / 80
WHO Regional Office for Europe (EURO) / More than 59000 / At least 193
WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia (SEARO) / 38038 / 480
WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO) / 109926 / 410

Total / More than 378 223 / At least 4525

*Given that countries are no longer required to test and report individual cases, the number of cases reported actually understates the real number of cases.

Information about the National 2009 H1N1 Flu Survey (http://origin.cdc.gov/NIS/faq_h1n1.htm)

What is the purpose of this study?

* The data collected from households like yours will help local, state and federal health care agencies evaluate influenza (flu) vaccination coverage and what Americans think about the current pandemic of swine flu, also known as the 2009 H1N1 flu virus.
* Health care agencies will use the data to increase vaccination rates and monitor resources across the country.
* This study will help researchers better understand why some people choose not to get vaccinated against the flu.

How are households chosen?

Households are scientifically selected to represent the US population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) depends on the help of households like yours to find out what Americans know about seasonal flu and H1N1 (swine) flu vaccinations. Participation is voluntary; however, without your help, your community may not be adequately represented in this important study on flu vaccinations.

Who is funding this survey?

It is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a federal governmental agency headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia

How is my information protected?

Confidentiality is mandated by federal law. Information that identifies you (or your household) will never be given to a company trying to sell products or services to you. All data we collect from you will remain confidential under federal law and you can skip any questions that you don’t want to answer. If you have any questions about your rights as a study participant, you may call Kathleen Parks, the NORC IRB Administrator, toll free, at 1-866-309-0542. If you would like more information about confidentiality and related federal laws that ensure the protection of your information, please visit: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/about/policy/confidentiality.htm

Who else is participating?

We are calling households from all across the country to interview an adult about vaccinations and related health issues.

What is Swine flu? What is a pandemic? Are we in a pandemic now?

The 2009 H1N1, or “swine flu” virus, is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. It is different from the “seasonal” influenza virus. The 2009 H1N1 virus was first detected in the United States in April 2009. It has spread from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.

A pandemic is a worldwide outbreak of an illness that can spread from person to person. The new H1N1 (swine) flu became a pandemic in June 2009.

Who is NORC?

NORC, the National Opinion Research Center, is a not-for-profit research organization at the University of Chicago.
