View Full Version : Libertarian roomates in a "liberty house"?

So a couple of acquaintances in the local liberty movement and I are tossing around the idea of getting a house, splitting rent, and turning it into "liberty central" or a "libertarian frat house" or something of that nature.

I've only lived with my parents and rented apartments. I had roommates in college (graduated in 2004) while living in an apartment.

What do yall think of this idea? What are the possibilities? What are the potential pitfalls?

Suggestions, thoughts, comments, etc!

Just make sure they are all stable.

Don't get mixed up with a dude that turns out to be an Alex Jones worshiper that does something stupid and gets some good old guilt by association going on.

Sounds like a house the government would love to raid.

Just kidding. Looks good on paper.

Matt:

I have a lot of rental property. One of the key things you want if you are an owner of said property is a contract with your tenant. Never go into a court room in front of a judge without it, it immediately weakens your position with the judge and make sure you document, document, document.

Tenants have a tendacy to destroy property so I will make sure that I get references by calling their employer's and former employers as well as last landlords. It doesnt take much damage for a tenant to run up the bill on a house into thousands of dollars. I have one house now that the damage to the house is $35,000.00. The tenant got mad that I wouldn't give anymore extensions. She and her boyfriend destroyed the walls, destoryed the carpet by bringing in a water hose and flooding the inside of the house, knocked out all the windows. The damn govt says I can't press charges b/c I didn't actually SEE her do it. Thankfully, with them being in their 20's I was smart enough to have the two tenants and their parents (one is a doctor) sign an agreement that any damage besides normal where and tear will be up to them to fix it.

Sounds cool. You should make it look all normal on the inside, until you pull on the Revolution A Manifesto book, which spins the bookcase around and opens the entrance to the secret liberty cave.

Then you should get a libertymobile.

Sounds good as long as you actually know the people (they are not strangers) and that you can trust them. Of coarse that goes for anytime you have roomates so if I had the option between libertarian roommates and liberal/neocon/socialist roommates, I would choose the former. It sounds like lx43 has some good advice too.

What are the potential pitfalls?

When you bring a friend to the house and said friend gets drunk and starts wandering around, he/she may get shot if the "no trespassing" sign on your housemate's room door is ignored.

If it were me I wouldn't really hesitate on the question, so long as I knew they were all mature.

I once rented a house with friends, and all though I still think of them as friends and good people in general, there will still a) too much drama b) too much mess (not enough cleaning going on) and c) too many parties/visitors. Granted we were all around 19/20ish, and the guys you are moving in with are probably older than that (guessing).

Just saying the fact that they are 'libertarians' shouldn't be the only factor in judging whether or not you want to live with them.

Also whether we have firearms in the house or not (confidential) it still makes us a prime target for burglary...

People you know and have something in common with are best.

Party animals that like to throw (host) parties are best avoided. Ditto those that sell drugs.

Never, ever rent/move in with a college freshman that just moved out of their parents house!

International students tend to be mellow and not a problem.

Grad students are great - they have no life and you rarely see them.

Ask about lifestyle things - how loud is the stereo? What kind of music do they like? hours they keep?, TV viewing habits? (a very excited foreign national jumping up and down and yelling - in French - over a soccer game on the tube is a site you will not soon forget...), drugs?, drinking?, cleaning?, having people over?, cooking? - those sort of things should be discussed before anyone moves in.

We've decided if we do this, no cable or satellite. And again, no drugs at all.

turn it into a studio for activism in the whole area. A new Freedom's Phoenix!

For an activist house - I'd say no cable is a bad idea. Think information collection like C-SPAN and other news as well as appearances on talk shows, etc. The potential to capture and spread on youtube, etc. Likewise, it also means no high speed internet, VOIP, and so on. Really, limiting your bandwidth and access to and potential to spread information is NOT a good idea.

We'll have Internet, DSL of course. All of us see TV as a distraction and a waste of money.

I was just about to post that :) If we could reach 20,000 movers, there would be porc manors everywhere in NH.

Interesting. I generally LISTEN to C-SPAN, but if something interesting comes on, especially if there are charts or power point I come in to watch. Beck is entertaining, and every once in a while I catch a movie or documentary. Agree - it is expensive... I lived a lot of years without owning a TV - but then again, I wasn't following politics back then and probably spent more on books per month than what cable charges.

It does have a lot of power if you can capture, edit and re-broadcast.

-tYeah that is a possibility. Getting a DVR-style computer hooked up to cable or something like that can be beneficial, but we'll see where this leads us.

We're just in the exploratory phase at the moment, but the landlord is pretty hot to trot. :(
