Tea party will feature candidates, political groups

At today's tea party in Sedgwick County Park, local Republicans will get a chance to meet four of the five announced GOP candidates for the 4th Congressional District seat.

They also will be able to interact with an array of political groups — Republican and otherwise — including Americans for Prosperity, the Flint Hills Center for Public Policy, the John Birch Society and the satirical group Morticians for Health Care Reform.

Lynda Tyler of Kansans for Liberty, the group sponsoring the tea party, said 25 candidates and groups have signed up to have displays.

The four congressional candidates who are participating are state Sens. Jean Schodorf, R-Wichita, and Dick Kelsey, R-Goddard; Republican National Committeeman Mike Pompeo; and business owner and retired airline pilot Jim Anderson. They, along with oilman and Wichita Wild owner Wink Hartman, make up the field in the Republican primary to replace Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

Main-stage speeches will be held to three minutes to maximize the opportunity for people to interact with the candidates and exhibitors, which is the primary goal of the festival-style event, Tyler said.

"I've got 150 minutes of daylight and 18 speakers," Tyler said.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the county park, west of I-235 and Zoo Boulevard.

It will be the third political tea party this year in Wichita. The first, on April 15, drew thousands to a vacant lot near Mid-Continent Airport to protest taxes on the annual deadline day for filing tax returns. A smaller follow-up event was held July 4.

The movement draws its name from the 1773 Boston Tea Party tax protest that helped solidify support for American independence from Britain.
