A newly declassified CIA report says interrogators threatened to kill the children of a Sept. 11 suspect.

The document, released Monday by the Justice Department, says one interrogator said a colleague had told Khalid Sheikh Mohammed that if any other attacks happened in the United States, "We're going to kill your children."

Another interrogator allegedly tried to convince a different terror suspect detainee that his mother would be sexually assaulted in front of him—though the interrogator in question denied making such a threat.

The report, written in 2004, examined CIA treatment of terror detainees following the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. It has been declassified as part of a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Doesn't matter, it's just an excuse to get public support for Obama's new federal interrogation program.

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration launched a criminal probe Monday into "unauthorized ... inhumane" interrogations of terror suspects during President George W. Bush's war on terrorism, spurred by newly declassified revelations of CIA tactics including threats to kill one suspect's children and to force another to watch his mother sexually assaulted.

Will these investigations go high up or will be limited to low level operators as happened in case of Abu Ghraib torture abuse?

I'm puzzled as to how this distances Obama from the Bush regime? Perhaps I can't read properly.

Obama would have a hard time playing ploitics with torture investigation now though. They have leaked too much already to be able to go back to political expediency.

A few flunkies will get burned, Those responsible will get promoted.
And everyone will go back to sleep.

What is wrong with threatening a prisoner's family? I would understand it being a problem if they did actually kill his children or rape his wife in front of him. But threats such as that are commonplace aren't they?

Didn't that actually happen at Abu Ghraib?
It creates a bad culture , some soldiers are being tried for raping and killing Iraqi children. What if someone with same mentality is put in interrogation room? There is a ticking bomb and raping a detainee's mother in front of him could save many lives, should it be done? Or if killing his children in front of him could save same millions of lives, why should it not be done?

If this is such an effective interrogation tool, should we start using it in our Justice system too on our own people?

Like I said, I would have a problem with it actually being done. Threats don't hurt anybody.

You think similar threats haven't been done by police and are done by police here in the US everyday? As far as I know, cops can pretty much say anything in the interrogation room. They are allowed to lie.

They should go after Bush and put him in prison.
