MEXICO CITY -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Co. plans to increase production and hire new workers at two of its plants in Mexico in response to an improvement in U.S. vehicle demand, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Later this month, General Motors de Mexico will ramp up output at its pickup truck plant in Silao to 45 vehicles per hour from 40, said Teresa Cid in a phone interview. That will increase to 47 vehicles per hour at the end of October.

At GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, in northern Mexico, the company will increase output of the Chevrolet Chevy model later this month to 22 units per hour from 12, Cid added.

Output on the assembly line that produces the Chevrolet HHR, Chevrolet Captiva and Cadillac SRX - also at the Ramos Arizpe plant - will be raised to 49 units per hour from 34.

To help boost output, GM plans to hire 140 workers at Silao and 300 at Ramos Arizpe.

The local production increases are part of a broader plan by GM to increase North American output by 20% in the fourth quarter.

GM de Mexico's production in the January-to-July period plunged 48% year-on- year to 144,104 units as the global economic crisis caused vehicle demand to dry up.

But with the U.S. recession thought to be nearing an end and the U.S. government's "Cash for Clunkers" rebate program luring car buyers back to dealerships, GM expects sales to improve.

Well, Cash for Clunkers will end on Monday, then they can go back to the original numbers they were making.
