Rand Paul, Kentucky Senator hopeful and son of Congressman Ron Paul, has raised over $500,000 for his campaign today in a "money bomb," much like the great online support that his father received during his 2008 presidential primary race. Most of these events were started by grassroots supporters and not by the official Ron Paul campaign. Rand's money bomb is scheduled for today, August 20, and as of 1:30 MST, the amount collected is over $510,000.

According to the latest poll, Rand Paul is in a solid second place with 26% of respodents saying that they would vote for him. The leading candidate, Trey Grayson, had 37%, but for the first poll, that is a promising result for Rand Paul, who has not really started to campaign. The money he raises today should help him to close that gap.

I love how a lot of these journalist types don't seem to understand that the number on the website is a running total, not just today's total.

Hopefully we'll break a million and then it will get spun in the media as pulling in a million in a single day, rather than the seven hundred and something thousand it really would be...

Well he hasn't raised $500,000 today, at least not yet. There was already $200,000+ raised by the time this started.
