For the republicans, Secretary of State Trey Grayson has been considered the presumptive nominee. But -- Bowling Green opthamologist Rand Paul is a wild card -- especially if he can tap into the national fundraising support of his father, former presidential candidate Ron Paul.

So far -- Grayson leads 37% to 26% in the Republican primary. Despite the 11 point lead, that's a strong early showing for the relatively unknown eye doctor.

There is another article from WHAS (news station here in Ky). It goes a little more into detail than the first article up there.

from article:

If the election were held today, Conway would defeat republican Rand Paul by 5% with 19% undecided.

Rand Paul, the son of former presidential candidate Ron Paul, might be the biggest surprise of any in any of this poll’s results.

Paul is especially strong against the democrat Dan Mongiardo, figuring in the 2.3 % margin of error, Paul is in a virtual dead heat with the Lt. Governor.

Considering that democrats hold a roughly 2-1 advantage in party registration in Kentucky.

Absolutely tremendous results.

Paul just announced like two weeks ago, and we haven't had our first real moneybomb.

Tremendous results. And the primary is still like 9 months away.

In the head to head matchups:

Grayson: 44%
Conway: 37%

Grayson: 46%
Mongiardo: 40%

Paul: 38%
Conway: 43%

Paul: 41%
Mongiardo: 43%

"Mainstream Republicans will be shocked by the early strength for Rand Paul. While among moderates, Trey Grayson has a commanding 50% - 19% lead, among conservatives who may be more motivated to vote in the climate of the off-year election, Grayson leads only by seven points, 35% - 28%.

Great news for Rand Paul ahead of his scheduled "moneybomb" internet fundraiser on August 20. It paints him as a legitimate candidate and not a fringe candidate. Trey Grayson plans his unsuspenseful "formal announcements" of his Senate run in a string of Kentucky towns and cities August 26 and 27."

The Rand Paul campaign should buy up that big advertising spot on that kywordsmith site just for the hell of it since it's cheap:

it's no big deal. we'd be doing the same thing. In reality they're probably worried because you'd think it'd be Grayson 90/Paul 10 given how long Grayson has been in elected politics.

I can't believe it's that close this early when Paul has raised 1/3rd what Grayson has.

This is a big win and should provide motivation to push the moneybomb.

The tide is shifting.

well work harder! :DI just checked out 6 very dense books from the local university library. If you would like to come over and read them for me and write up a report that would help. Or if you would like to give me some money so that I don't have to work as many hours and I can instead focus on the campaign, that would be helpful as well. ;)

good point! wise words for us all! i am psyched!!!
the poll results have Rand Paul being strong
and way ahead of many of the contenders.
Grayson's lead could be fleeting... if he moves
in on the Lt. Gov's support, he looses MORE people
to Rand Paul, who are totally Republican in mindframe.
