Right in the opening sentence, the blame falls on "Republican pressure".

Of course, that's red meat for Republicans, because they'll see that as a victory.

Facing mounting opposition to the overhaul, administration officials left open the chance for a compromise with Republicans that would include health insurance cooperatives instead of a government-run plan. Such a concession probably would enrage Obama's liberal supporters but could deliver a much-needed victory on a top domestic priority opposed by GOP lawmakers.

Not as local as we'd like it to be, but it's a good start. :)

The only reason some local Democrats were supporting the plan was because of ths public option. I think Obama is eroding his support. Luckily, he has those consisting almost entirely on entitlement programs still supporting him here, too bad they don't have a tendency to vote.

i'm weary of this, it has strategy written all over it. I bet they know the markets will be down big tomorrow, so they announced this today.

This was to be expected. Propose some outrageous plan and then back off on it so something a little bit less socialist can get through. However, the regulations they will put in place like requiring insurance companies to not discriminate against pre-existing conditions will eventually have the effect of putting them out of business and making way for an even more socialized system.

I agree. Premiums will double easily, and only a few companies will stay in business. Hopefully, catastrophic insurance is still an option, but I doubt it.

I think the rise in militia's and gun sales had something to do with it.

I'm just saying that the Iraq War went on for so long because most of the people against it(liberals don't like owning guns) were not armed, so there was no deterrent against it. Bush never had to fear an armed protest.

Obama had the majority of both houses of Congress and he of course is a democrat but the opposition to universal health care is armed so Obama did have to fear an armed protest.
