Editorial: "What Can I Do?"

By: Jack McLain

It seems that never have so many folks come to us by phone and e-mail with the question, "What can I do?" They are extremely burdened. They are discouraged. They are disgusted with the political situation. They are fed up with the two major parties. They are fearful of those who are the prospective candidates for president in November.

Most of them seem to feel that the Constitution Party has the answer to their dilemma but that we are too small to be effective. Some feel that they have answers to make us grow---answers that we somehow missed in our 15 years as a party. Some have caught the vision that they must somehow get involved in the process, that they must jump on board and work.
Then comes progress!

But how shall they work for the party? We don’t have jobs to offer, only volunteer positions. There’s no money in it, just the wonderful satisfaction that one can be used to help save our nation from oblivion.

Then comes the rub, so to speak. The most important work of a political party is not that of a political action committee, or a debate society, or that of numerous discussion groups, but that of running candidates for public office.

With that simple revelation, the prospective worker often becomes silent. There are so many reasons why he cannot run for office that one can get weary in listening. They all sound so legitimate. But how many candidates for office really feel that they have the time, the money, or even the full qualifications for such a venture? Many patriots may run for political office simply because they know that they are needed on the ballot! Isn’t that a good reason?

Now we’re thankful for those volunteers who maintain that there is no way that they can possibly run for office, but that they are willing to help a candidate on his way. These people are needful to the process. They can be used to help obtain petitions for ballot access, canvassing, fundraising, literature distribution, and, if experienced, even to give helpful advice or direction.

But there is a potential problem here also. If a volunteer cannot or will not run for office, and if we have no candidates running anywhere in the vicinity of the volunteer, his help suddenly becomes very minimal. So then we are back to the original problem---lack of candidates for a political party whose goal is always to give the voter a CHOICE. When election time comes and voters call us to ask for whom they can vote, we must tell them that we have no one in their district on the ballot, with the exception of our presidential candidate this year, of course.

Does this help clarify our continual appeal for more candidates? This has been our message down through the months and years, that a political party, in order to have any credibility as a political party, must run candidates for public office. If a person likes the foundation and goal of our Constitution Party, to Restore Our Republic, then is it not worth the extra determined effort to run for some office, be it small or great?

A student called me recently from the Miami area asking some questions about our party and the method of ballot access. She said that she was doing a report on why third parties in America stay small. We have news for those who would ask. We cannot blame it all on the shameful exclusion of third parties by the news media, or our exclusion from the national debates.

In one sense, those who inquire about our party, and even endorse our party, but fail to do anything more to further the cause of our party, are certainly partially to blame. Mere acknowledgement of a political party, but not being willing to react as if the cause is crucial to the survival of America, must share the blame of our not becoming large and influential.
One can easily become satisfied that he is doing his share without giving his full measure.

Every day there are opportunities to further the Constitution Party but, as we have said and written scores of times, "Have you considered becoming a candidate for local, county, State or federal office?" A political party MUST have candidates, or it will be ineffective.
Many say that they never heard of our party until they found us "on the web." We are all to blame for this. Some ask me the facetious question, " Who will you vote for, Republican or Democrat?" Even some Christian news sources allow for only two choices, both of them evil.

Somehow, some way, American patriots MUST get the message: Voting for the supposed lesser of two evils is still EVIL. Americans must awaken to the evil that is being promoted continually in America through two political parties going the same direction to bring the American Republic to its doom and conclusion. -JM

Dr. Marshall DeRosa, Professor of Political Science,
Candidate for Florida US Senate 2010, Constitution Party

Dr. Marshall DeRosa, Florida US Senate Candidate

Marshall L. DeRosa is a Professor of Political Science at Florida Atlantic University. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Houston, and has taught at Louisiana State University and Davis and Elkins College. He is an adjunct faculty member for the Ludwig von Mises Institute, a Salvatori Fellow of the Heritage Foundation, and a member of the Philadelphia Society.

His publications include The Confederate Constitution of 1861: An Inquiry Into American Constitutionalism (University of Missouri Press) and The Ninth Amendment and the Politics of Creative Jurisprudence (Transaction Publishers) and most recently Redeeming American Democracy (Pelican Publishing Company 2007). He has authored book chapters, journal articles, and book reviews. His research interests focus on the American founding principles.

Professor DeRosa has spent the past 36 years studying American politics and institutions. As an academic he had the luxury of analyzing political developments from theoretical, historical, and political perspectives from the sidelines of the ivory tower. Realizing the profound shift of political power from the people to the national and transnational elites, a process which has been incremental since the Civil War but intensely accelerated since the election of 2000, Dr. DeRosa concluded that fundamental constitutional liberties were at heightened risk of being irrevocably lost. Inspired by and responding to Congressman Ron Paul’s 2008 election efforts, Dr. DeRosa began to seriously consider a more active type of political engagement, not necessarily as a candidate but as an advisor. When asked to consider running for the United States Senate under the Constitution Party’s banner, after prayerful consideration and encouragement by family and friends he agreed to do so.

Constitution Party Candidate, Rob Taylor, stepsup his
campaign for US Senate in Wisconsin for 2010!
(www.robtaylorforsenate.com)

"A Senator Taylor would be every liberty-loving American's best friend and a fierce, unwavering constitutional champion. Unlike many arrogant, self-serving congressmen who believe once they are elected to Washington they can do whatever they please, Rob Taylor knows exactly where Article
1: Section 8 and the Tenth Amendment draw the line on an elected federal officer's powers, what he may vote for and what he is duty bound to vote against, and Rob will not cross that constitutional
line. He will NEVER use his elected post to micromanage our lives, draft unconstitutional laws or pick our pockets to fund more socialism, but will vote to secure and protect our individual rights and to
defend the nation's sovereignty and heritage. With Rob, there will be no more compromise, no more concessions. Rob Taylor has something far greater than my confidence...he has my vote!"

Obama promises aggressive action

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper, left, Mexico's President Felipe Calderon and President Obama pose Monday for the official photo at the North American Leaders' Summit in Guadalajara

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Targeting the long and painful recession, President Obama said Monday that he and the leaders of Mexico and Canada have agreed to “aggressive, coordinated action” to restore growth across North America.

Noting the huge trading partnership among the three neighbors, Obama said that commerce must be expanded, not restricted.

Wrapping up a North American summit Monday afternoon, Obama joined Mexican President Felipe Calderón and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper for a news conference after about two hours of talks.

The president also emphasized a need for orderly and legal immigration, a sensitive issue on all borders.

"But ultimately I think the American people want fairness," he said. "And we can create a system in which you have strong border security, we have an orderly process for people to come in, but we're also giving an opportunity for those who are already in the United States to be able to achieve a pathway to citizenship so that they don't have to live in the shadows and their children and their grandchildren can have a full participation in — in the United States."

Subject: Good news on the Enumerated Powers Act
The Enumerated Powers Act (HR 450) would require Congress to identify the Constitutional authority for each law it passes. We think this requirement is an important step on the long road to restoring Constitutional limits and the Bill of Rights.

When we last reported to you the bill had 32 co-sponsors in the House. Now it has 48.
Better yet, there's now a companion bill in the Senate (S. 1319), and it already has 21 co-sponsors!

We think DC Downsizers have played a big role in making this happen. You have constantly asked for new co-sponsors on this legislation, and the number of co-sponsors has constantly grown. Let's keep pushing.

First, check the lists below to see if one or more members of your Congressional delegation is already co-sponsoring this legislation. Then, use our Educate the Powerful System (sm) to write a letter to your delegation, thanking or requesting participation, as the case may be.

Here's the list of House co-sponsors of HR 450 . . .

Progress in Wyoming!

Chuck Baldwin, in Tulsa, Oklahoma area,

for “The State of This Christian Nation” Address!

TULSA, OK-- Chuck Baldwin, 2008 Constitution Party Presidential Candidate, will speak on "The State of This Christian Nation" at 7:00 pm on Friday, August 14 at New Life Church, which is located at 12215 N. Garnett Road, Collinsville, OK. There is no cost to attend the meeting.

Oklahoma State Chairman of the Constitution Party, Thomas Holmes said, “The Democrats and Republicans have held hands while skipping down a primrose path past the horrors of the war in Iraq, the perils of the illegal invasion at home and the devastation of America’s economy. It’s long past time for Americans to say: ‘Enough is enough!’”

Holmes noted that, with the mounting disgust of both major parties, the climate is better now for a third party than at any time in the last 40 years.

“With the Democrats now free to push their socialist agenda, more and more Americans are realizing it is critical we return to the tried and true principles of constitutionally-based government; which both of the two ‘big box’ parties refuse to do. The Constitution Party stands alone as our best hope for restoring constitutional government.”

As a follow up to his presidential campaign last year, Baldwin of Pensacola, Florida continues to travel the country and bring attention to the principal tenets of the party’s platform: ‘Life, Liberty, and Limited Government’.

In addition to his presidential ambitions, Baldwin is an accomplished radio talk show host, syndicated columnist, and church pastor. His columns have been posted on numerous Web sites worldwide and frequently published in newspapers, newsletters and magazines across the U.S. His radio show, Chuck Baldwin Live, features his constitutionalist commentaries on 15 radio stations in five states, including Florida, Virginia, Alabama, Texas and Utah.

The Constitution Party
The Democrats and Republicans have squandered the Founders' legacy of liberty and justice under the Constitution. Countless government officials in the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government ignore their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution.

Join the Constitution Party in its work to restore our government to its Constitutional limits and our law to its Biblical foundations.

Read the CP's full platform here....

Seven Principles of the Constitution Party are:

1. Life: For all human beings, from conception to natural death;
2. Liberty: Freedom of conscience and actions for the self-governed individual;
3. Family: One husband and one wife with their children as divinely instituted;
4. Property: Each individual's right to own and steward personal property without government burden;
5. Constitution: and Bill of Rights interpreted according to the actual intent of the Founding Fathers;
6. States' Rights: Everything not specifically delegated by the Constitution to the federal government, nor prohibited by the Constitution to the states, is reserved to the states or to the people;
7. American Sovereignty: American government committed to the protection of the borders, trade, and common defense of Americans, and not entangled in foreign alliances.
