He's never said he's a republican. He used to say he was a conservative, now he says he's a libertarian/conservative.

He is freaking out about things getting violent. The left has been railing that he tries to incite violence. It's a CYA move. Although I don't think he wants violence. I know I don't - God no! We'll be playing right into their hands.
