A seven year old boy was seized by Swedish police recently because the parents wanted to homeschool him, the parents argued that he couldn't cope with the school environment. The authorities also added that the boy's dental hygiene was lacking to the justification.

Family was going to move - then the son was taken

The parents didn't want their seven year old son to attend school. They felt the environment was too stressful. When the family was leaving for India to work on a humanitarian project, the police stepped on board the plane and seized the boy.

The Gotlandic family planned to move to India in June last year, where the mother originally came from - but the journey was postponed.

Demanded home schooling

When autumn came, it was time for the son to enroll in school. The family demanded home schooling until the boy could attend school in India.

- He didn't want to enroll in school. He thought it would be stressful with all the children. It was more the environment in its entirety - he usually likes children, his dad Christer Johansson says.
The family has attempted to teach the boy on their own and claims he can read and write a bit.
But the municipality declared that the boy should attend school and charged the parents a fine of 250 crowns($30) for every day that he didn't attend class, Gotlands Tidningar writes.
But the parents didn't pay.

Almost kidnapping

The family, who lives on southern Gotland, planned to move to India to work on a humanitarian project. But the travel plans were squashed four weeks ago, mere minutes before the plane was to take off. Police officers came on board and took the family to a room at Arlanda airport, after which the son was taken away.

- We were completely taken by surprise and in shock. My wife collapsed, the father writes in an E-mail to GT.
- Kidnapping is a strong word to use, but when I see the event in hindsight, it's not far from the truth, he writes.
Decisions to seize children are very rare on Gotland. According to Gustaf Hoffstedt (m), chairman of the social bureau, it only takes place a couple of times per year.

Seized the boy

On June 25 this year the family was finally flying to India. Shortly before takeoff at Arlanda airport, the police went on board and seized the boy.
Since then, the mother and father have met their son twice - the first time for 90 minutes, the other time for 2.5 hours, according to the father.
- My wife has completely collapsed. I don't know what to do, it's been such a long journey. We really sold everything we had to afford the journey and the relocation. Since there's nothing to go on, this is more or less a kidnapping, Christer Johansson says.
On Tuesday, the case was in the court, which will determine if the seizure was correct.
- It feels like the social services are smearing us. The only faults they found in our son were caries in his teeth. Otherwise he was healthy both physically and mentally, Christer Johansson says.

United decision

According to the chairman of the social bureau, Gustaf Hoffstedt, the committe for individuals in the bureau was united in seizing the boy.
- Everyone feels it's a failure every time the police gets involved. But sometimes the going gets rough within the social services, as in this case where it's a case of defending a child's right to education, Gustaf Hoffstedt says.
- If the court feels we're at fault, the seizure will cease, otherwise it will stand.

If you don't give your children up to the government they'll come looking for you. Until we take back our government, this outrage will continue.
