Someone brought this idea up to me the other day that Cheney had been using NLP (or essentially brainwashing) in his speeches in order to get reelected.

Read this:

And then do your own research on Neuro Linguistic Programming

should we really be focusing on this rather than focusing on people's lack of political education that led to him being reelected?

What would happen if the woman mentioned in the example in the article realized he was trying to program her response to the slam of a door?

She'd get pissed off and it wouldn't work.

Knowledge is power.

I would imagine most successful public speakers take a class in Neuro Linguistic Programming.

That kind of sort of happened to a friend of mine. My best friend was out of town for several weeks and his wife was at work and a co-worker kept talking to her. She was always feeling weird after talking to this guy but didn't know why. She is very close to her husband so they were talking about it often. The guy wasn't creepy or anything it was just she always had an emotional response after every conversation for some reason.

Well her husband started to do some research on the things she had said, and come to find out he was trying to run NLP on her in an attempt to get her to go home with him. So her husband told her exactly what to say to him the next day, and she called him on it. She was like "oh, I know exactly what you are trying to do.... " and named the methods, techniques, etc. Needless to say he was put in his place real quick and didn't bother her anymore.

and there were a couple of others I can't remember.

Another one of my friends was into this stuff (he was a psych major) and he proved to me the head games work a lot of the time. He was able to pick girls up anytime he wanted because of it.

My favorite response to a guy who would come on too slick and too quick -

"I don't go out with tramps".

Men will call a woman a tramp but they don't like to think of themselves in that way.

Here is an example of how it's done

I'm not sure how necessary it is to bash the idea of mind programming in this thread, seeing as how the link is "The Remote Viewer".

While it is difficult to find a consistent description of NLP among those who claim to be experts at it, one metaphor keeps recurring. NLP claims to help people change by teaching them to program their brains

And this is the interpretation of NLP that I disagree with. You can't program people's minds just by talking in a certain way. Manipulating some people some of the time by playing on their emotions, is a far cry from mind control.

Maybe a few of them. But one thing is certain, ALL promoters of NLP, and people who sell NLP books, will spread rumors that powerful and successful people are consciously using NLP. The art of persuasion and playing on people's emotions has been around for a long time, Bandler and Grindler didn't discover it but their followers will see NLP usage everywhere they want to. Cheney didn't need to learn how to manipulate stupid voters from anyone, he just needed to take a few pointers from Karl Rove.

Here is an example of how it's done

Interesting. Seems to be an indirect hypnosis. I noticed the touching, which he doesn't mention in the explanation. When he grabbed the guy's hand and set in on the table, he seemed to go into a semi-hypnotic state. Probably left him open to the subliminal words. Also notice all of the red circles in the room. Multiple things were going on there.
