Sadly, this will appease his base.

That should be pretty obvious by now... There are only two reasons why they aren't just going forward with a single-payer system:

1. While they have almost all of the votes in the House, they fear that the Blue Dogs may side with the Republicans and then all is lost. It becomes Liberals vs. Blue Dogs/Republicans, and that is unwinnable for the Liberals.

2. There is not a legit 60 in the Senate. There really are only 58 Democrats. And of those, at least two of those Senators may very well not be shoe-in votes. While there may be others that aren't, Specter (D-PA) and Bayh (D-IN) are up for re-election and have been less in lockstep than other Democrats have. Specter is a wild card who changes his views every hour on the hour. Evan Bayh has stated that he is concerned about the debt and is beginning to come through on that concern. Both voted against the budget.

Additionally, a straight forward single-payer system reeks of partisanship. Right now, Americans believe that Obama is reaching out to the Republicans, but they refuse to work with him. While the exact opposite is true, Obama needs to keep that facade going.

a single-payer system:

The health care plan they are trying to push is not even remotely close to a single payer system....

Have you done any research at all on the current health care reform they are pushing?

It's way worse than a single payer program.

A single payer program would be amazingly better than what the crap they are pushing right now.

I've read a few pages of it. The parts I have read are mostly what I expected: pharmaceutical monopoly protection, vaccine promotion, expansion of executive power.

Details are appreciated.

I am wondering when the mandatory draft is going to slip into law so Obama can have his civilian military force.

Partly, yeah, you guys are right. Certainly at least some of the people who are pushing Obamacare are hoping that it will turn into single payer.

But, about the stuff Obama was saying towards the beginning of the clip.. a lot of that is just talk. He's pandering there. You guys aren't liberals, so the pandering is sort of lost on you, just like a conservative politician talking about how he likes guns... that's pandering to one crowd, but a liberal crowd certainly wouldn't see it as pandering... instead, they would say "See how these crazy right-wing nut jobs want to have grenade launchers available at every corner store?" They would take him entirely seriously when he was just blowing hot air.

Obama has been paid off by the insurance companies... there is no way he's getting rid of them. Obama is not at all for single payer. Don't believe the hype, or Obama's lies.

The Democrats are in a very difficult position right now, in that they are a center-right party with a liberal base. That means a lot of talk, a lot of pandering, and very little action. That means, if they do take action--and they must or else their base will sharpen their pitchforks--it will be in minute half-steps. We're not going to see a carbon tax, but they will try Cap-and-trade (a gift to the coal companies and derivative traders). We're not going to see single payer, but we will see some sort of mangled hybrid Obamacare crap. They're not going to end the wars or close down the secret prisons, but he'll talk about it a lot.

What!?!? Some Conservative somewhere likes guns? *cheers*

As far as your Cap-and-Trade comment: Coal companies will be severely hampered by this. The House knew this, so they put a provision in that halts the taxes on them for a few years. As one Republican put it, "thank you Mr. Waxman, now the coal companies have a few years to re-locate to China tax free!"

Civil Radiant: Seriously, if you know anything I don't, please share.
