Switzerland and the United States reached an agreement in principle yesterday to settle out of court a case that sought to force Swiss banking giant UBS to turn over the names of wealthy American clients suspected of tax evasion, a lawyer for the government said.

UBS and the Swiss government have been battling efforts to force the bank to disclose the names of 52,000 American clients of UBS suspected of tax evasion. The efforts threatened to peel back layers of Swiss banking secrecy, the backbone of the world’s private banking industry, and have rattled UBS, the world’s largest private bank.

The push for the disclosure of client names had also escalated into a diplomatic incident between Switzerland and the United States, as UBS had argued that complying with the American request would cause it to violate Swiss laws.

Everyone who is anyone has long since moved out of Switzerland. I can't remember the current secret banking place, but I feel like it's the Cayman Islands.

Yeah, like in the '80's,right?

UBS didn't like American laws, they shouldn't have penetrated the American market.

Panama is one of the best...very low taxes, good privacy laws and safe. That's where my dad has everything registered

They should release them slowly - with MAJOR PRESS RELEASES! - start with US politicians and major CEO's.... including those that have moved to other banks...

Why? I was hoping Switzerland would stick to their guns. Kudos to people who can find ways to keep more of their money.

bank secrecy was put in place to protect Jews from Hitler.

they stood up to Hitler in the 30s, FDR in 1945. William Tell would be ashamed to be Swiss today.
