$3 Million grant to UIC to study lesbian drinking

CHICAGO (STNG) -- The UIC College of Nursing has received a $3 million federal grant to continue research to identify risk factors for excessive drinking among lesbians.

The five-year study, led by Tonda Hughes, professor of health systems science, will examine how stressful experiences -- childhood sexual abuse, adult sexual assault and discrimination based on ethnicity or sexual orientation -- are related to psychological harm and hazardous drinking in adult women, a release from UIC said.

Data will be collected from a diverse sample of 384 adult lesbians in the area who were previously interviewed by Hughes and her research team in 2000 and 2004. Another 250 new subjects -- 18 to 25 years old and of African-American and Hispanic descent -- will also be interviewed.

The results of the study, Hughes said, will be used to understand how women cope with stress. The group will be compared with heterosexual urban and suburban women in the National Study of Health and Life Experiences of Women, a 20-year longitudinal study of more than 1,600 women.

The findings may help develop more effective alcohol abuse prevention and intervention strategies, Hughes said.

She has researched lesbian health issues for more than 20 years. In 1999, she initiated the first phase of the research in a study of drinking behavior among nearly 450 lesbians.

"Myths and stereotypes of lesbians as alcoholics and heavy drinkers are largely based on studies conducted in the 1970s that recruited most of their samples from gay bars," Hughes said. "Our research is designed to provide a much more realistic picture of the patterns and variability of lesbians' drinking."

In 2002, Hughes launched the second phase of the research, believed to be the first-ever longitudinal study of lesbian health. Follow-up interviews were conducted four years later to learn how the subjects' drinking patterns had changed and what factors had influenced those changes.

The new study, combined with the 2000 and 2004 surveys, will provide the most comprehensive data yet available on the characteristics and determinants of hazardous drinking among lesbians, Hughes said.

The grant is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, one of the National Institutes of Health.

Yet these people seem to be saying--indeed, seem to think it's a foregone conclusion, that women become lesbians due to sexual abuse and assault, and that they're more stressed than heterosexual women. First, I think that's too simplistic. Secondly, I'm amused that they're straying from the 'official liberal script'.

Well, if they start off from some false assumptions, the data they generate will just screw the government up more. Which is good. Not worth three million, though.

You have to remember this professor is trying to get free money so she will say anything to win the grant. It is the way of the free loader.

Actually, human sexuality like most traits is a bell curve. At either end are those who are absolutley hetero or **** and there is a small percentage of these. As you progress to the middle the tendency to either decreases. In the middle you theoretically have those who could go either way, but social pressure predisposes them to be hetero (survival of the species and all that).

If you are somewhere near the middle you might experiment if you were in a social group that encouraged experimentation. This is happening more often now as the push to have children is not as important in society now.

Another thing that happens is that early childhood abuse by a parent or trusted elder could push someone who is biologically neutral one way or the other simply because intimacy with someone who is the same sex as the abuser is not possible.

Many women who are abused by men commoditze their bodies and will have relations with men for profit but reserve psychologically intimate relations for women.

I can't think of how stupid a use of funds are in this case. Sure, sure "for the sake of science" can be used, but 3 million????

so that would mean that if they got all of the African-American and Hispanic lesbians in that age range, in Chicago and an even distribution, then there would be roughly 2,000 lesbians in those two races - ie: there must be many, many more!

I never knew Chicago was such a hotbed of African-American and Hispanic lesbian activity! - hope she doesn't run out of lesbians! :)

So this research is supposed to benefit our understanding of how many thousand people nationwide? I'm thinking not that many.

I propose the following: two thousand somewhat randomly selected women between the ages of 18 and 28 will be placed into a controlled sleep over pillow fight situation. Then the filmed results will be carefully evaluated for evidence of emerging lesbian activity.

So . . . where's my grant?
