it's technical difficulties of some sort i'm sure don't call them....guessing they got swarmed with internet traffic after they sent out the following e-mail and something got messed up.

September 25, 2007

Your efforts to raise $500,000 online for the Ron Paul 2008 campaign by September 30th are quickly paying off. Thank you!

We now have a real-time counter on our website http://www.ronpaul2008.com that updates as soon as a donation is made. It also flashes the names of recent donors.

Take a look. It's fun to watch.

Keep up the great work. Thank you again!

and soon after this e-mail it broke

Well, it still shows the level graphically. Does it make that big of a difference if you know the exact number?

Maybe they're having trouble with bandwith handling all the donations and us watching at the same time!!! That would be good news.

Probably technical difficulties. I cannot even connect to the page.

I think it was having problems earlier because it kept saying "blah, blah, blah"

Maybe hacked? Or maybe the money is growing a little too fast to be exposed in that manner over the internet? Kent Snyder is a smooth operator and I think he has been very careful to make sure that the other campaigns dont know how well we are doing financially until the exact moment that HE wants them to know.

Remember Mccain called Ron for $ after the last disclosure. :D

here's an idea everybody quit hittin reload and get off the website for 10 minutes and maybe the traffic can die down and they can fix it.

I "like" the dollar amount, BUT I don't think strategically it makes sense. I mean, all other campaigns taking a look, making plans and such... sometimes IF you allow others to see the deck you are holding -- then you soften the impact.

If your giing to call, ask them to get a strategic speech writer for the rest of his campaign.

I still have the thermometer, but it's been at $196968 for a while.

Refreshing the page now, and... Doh! Timed out... Now I got it again, thermometer is still up, but it isn't picking up the updates.

I think they're getting server timeouts because the Flash calls back too often to get updates. It looks like it updates about every 10 seconds, and that should be moved to maybe a minute to cut down on the number of server hits.

Being a flash application designer my self, I can see the problem with the exact dollar amount and the rapid updates being done so often. We as a web culture are hammering the poor site, and the flash applet has to maintain a constant connection to do the updates. This can be a burden on the source server and database. Also, crunching exact dollar amounts to percentages for every request also puts a burden on the server.

What is easier to maintain is an average, saved as a computed variable on the server that can instead be served out instead of the dollar amount.

Just my thoughts.

I just thought of some exculpatory evidence for the accused.
The thermometer has only been up for a day.....
but it takes at least a month before anyone at the campaign will read your email.

It's totally going to pop back up and say $210,000.

I love the Revolution.

The images are loading slow to. So it would be wise to assume the server is overloaded. Everyone must be back from buying Halo 3. (psh, who wants to play that crap when I can watch Ron Paul's warchest grow!)

I hope they put the number back. That is much more of a draw to people to donate. If they're having trouble displaying everything, I say take off the time countdown instead, for now.

I have watched and the site has reverted back to "3:03" where I had seen "3:37" previously. It looks like maybe we're all watching too intently and the site is not handling the bandwidth or something to that effect.

Check back later!

The time countdown does not task their servers at all, though. That is calculated on your computer. The only thing that taxes their servers might be either the names of recent donors or the dollar amount.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER initiate or participate in mass attacks via phone, email or anything else to the campaign. They don't need to waste their time on such things--they have a lot of other real work to do.

Elwar
09-25-2007, 02:53 PM
I did it. I called Ron Paul's cell phone (ya, we're close buds) and told him to take the numbers down. I have a psychotic fear of the number three hundred thousand (even typing out the words gets me squeamish). So I told him I didn't want to have to see that number.

I heard him in the background doing some clicking on the keyboard and he said it was all taken care of.

Elwar
09-25-2007, 02:56 PM
In reality, most likely they probably discovered a flaw in their coding that might have put some real numbers out there as far as size of donations being put to names, or something along those lines. And they may have wanted to allow people to donate without the dollar amount being tied to their name.

That's my theory on it. I'm sure they had a legitimate concern.

They're having technical difficulties and they KNOW that's it's a good thing to have the exact #. Stop acting like you're some mega genius and the campaign staffers don't know whats going on! Sheesh, people.
