You may be able to get the art for the "Champion of the Constitution" poster from Austin Meetup member Jerri (http://ronpaul.meetup.com/14/members/4221707/). She had it done for her boat's sail.

What fun we had out there on Wednesday! People on the street were very receptive to taking free pocket constitutions (& Ron Paul literature) from us!

(Except for Thompson, that is.)

Laywers like Thompson WASHINGTON — On the presidential campaign stump, Republican candidate Fred Thompson speaks with a Southern drawl refined in Tennessee. But when it comes to early support, his campaign treasury has a strong Texas flavor.

Only Tennessee, Thompson's home state, has had more of his campaign donors than does Texas. And three of Thompson's top 10 fundraising meccas are Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth.

The Lone Star State accounted for $337,450 of Thompson's $3.5 million raised through midyear, the most recent disclosure required by federal law. A Thompson campaign spokeswoman declined to provide updated figures.

Thompson, 65, formally announced his presidential candidacy Sept. 5 after exploring a possible race for three months. The former Tennessee senator and actor has a long way to go to match the prolific fundraising efforts of Republican rivals Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, who has raised $44 million, and Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, with $36 million. One-time GOP front-runner John McCain has raised (and spent) $25 million.

But Thompson is banking on Texas, with its track record as a political ATM for conservative causes, to fuel his campaign. Aides say he also is counting on Texas, with its 140 delegates to the Republican National Convention, to propel him to the front of the pack if no candidate clinches the nomination before the state's March 4 primary.

The newest entry into the 2008 presidential field has some big-name backers in Texas, including Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, Attorney General Greg Abbott and U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Longview. Sixty of the 81 Republican state House members and eight of the 20 GOP state senators signed a letter asking the actor-politician to enter the race.

"The mood is very positive," said Patterson. "He seems so real and down home. He's a guy who measures what he says, he understands the Constitution and the principles of federalism."
Seeking to cash in on his recent Texas endorsements and raise as much money as possible before the end of the reporting period on Sept. 30, Thompson spent three days in the state last week and conducted fundraising events in Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Dallas.

The Houston reception on Sept. 18 was held at the River Oaks home of Dan Tutcher, president of Enbridge Energy Co. Among the co-hosts of the $1,000-per-person event — or $2,300 to get your picture snapped with the candidate — were Houston art gallery owner Meredith J. Long, state Rep. Gary Elkins, R-Houston, and Houston attorney John E. O'Neill, who led the group of Swift boat veterans critical of 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Patterson said the Texas fundraising tour brought out a variety of Republican donors.

"We had guys in blue jeans, we had guys in dark suits, we had men and women," he said. "We're seeing new faces ... not people I'm used to seeing at political fundraisers."

Richard Murray, director of the University of Houston Center for Public Policy, said Thompson "fills something of a void" for conservative voters looking for "the return of Ronald Reagan."

Stuart Rothenberg, publisher of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report, agreed that many Texas conservatives were hesitant to embrace the early GOP field.

"There's probably a lot of conservative money in Texas that figures that Fred Thompson may be the closest thing to their ideal candidate," Rothenberg said.

Murray said Thompson's late entry into the campaign means that "he's got a lot on his plate," from fundraising to building a national campaign organization. And Thompson, who has yet to participate in candidate debates, faces higher stakes when he joins his rivals before national TV cameras in October.

"He'll be under a lot of pressure to perform," said Murray.
